It is relevant. It was the Film makers wishes, not Criterion, on the color grading of these films. You wouldn't blame FOX for changes George Lucas made to Star Wars would you?

That's because a few based these on screen captures alone. However some of these titles in question while played in motion show no discrepancies in similar circumstances.

Some of it is fanboyism more then anything else.

I find it fascinating that Criterion is doing this title - I'm sure it can look better than the current disc (it's no slouch either!), but will be interesting to see how much...considering that it was shot through a soft lens to give it that wonderfully dreamy, hazy, look. One of DePalma's finest!

It's completely irrelevant because we were talking about expectation of satisfaction with the end product because the Criterion name is on it. It's not about the cause of said dissatisfaction.

I have a feeling they acquired this in a package deal with Carrie (and who knows what else). Wouldn't that be wonderful? I wish De Palma hadn't shot ALL of his films with Vaseline on the lens, though. It gives the films a low-budget look IMO

Nahh it's called diffusion photography and it looks great when the film is properly remastered (see the region free Arrow Obsession disc for proof).

Still thinking we'll get a Criterion upgrade of Sisters at some point.

I wonder if there's a chance that Body Double could see the light of day on Criterion. It was only released a short while ago on Blu-ray by Twilight Time.

I would guess when Twilight Time's 3 year deal ends Criterion could bid on it if they wanted.

Criterion has added a new special feature: • New conversation between De Palma and filmmaker Noah Baumbach

Not at all impressed with the features on this compared to the Arrow, or even the MGM...guess I'll just be waiting to see how much better the transfer looks. It's a great movie and anyone who doesn't have it yet should definitely hold off buying one of the existing versions till this is out, but a blind double-dip on this doesn't sound smart considering the previous versions weren't exactly disasters. If it was a Criterion release of The Fury and you had the TT one, then yeah!

As far as I can tell, it has all the extras from the MGM disc plus new ones.

Right, I mean, the new ones aren't exciting enough that they'd make me double-dip from the MGM one on their own. Obviously if I had neither the Criterion would be the better choice even disregarding the transfer, though.

I think a new 4k remaster is the core point here, and well worth a buy for fans. Goodfellas this month only added one 30 minute feature that wasn't that great, but it was worth every penny for that 4k remaster.

Well, seems postponing my purchase of the Arrow release again and again for once was a good strategy. I will definitely get this, unless Criterion totally screws up the compression.

If you don't mind me asking, what's wrong with the disc you're referring to?
The video has been heavily digitally filtered to the point where there's little grain left:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Child.../48077/#Review

Criterion should never have accepted the master from Pathé, the company that also stood behind the even worse French BD of 'Le Samouraï'.

What's heartbreaking to me is that some (I think it was over at the Criterion Forum) reported that the digital projection/ DCP, which was shown in theaters in France, looked much better and more film-like, so the de-noising was apparently only done in preparation of the BD.

This and 'The Earrings of Mme de ...' basically shook my confidence in Criterion's output to the point where I no longer will blind-buy their releases. And I have been and avid fan and collector of their output for more than 20 years over three different formats.

I caught a theatrical screening of Children Of Paradise in a theatre here in Vancouver and can tell you the DCP looked just as shitty as the blu ray.
That was easily their worst release but I certainly wont hold that one against them if it was the only thing they could get.

Then you've got Body Double and The Fury which were released in Region A by Twilight Time that are out of print, but are available from other regions.
For those of you that think "Obsession" blu-ray is not available for Region A: There is a Region Free version available. I bought it years ago.

That's the UK release from Arrow. It is region free as you said. It's pretty cheap at Amazon UK
