Does anyone realistically believe Criterion may also acquire CARRIE? As good as the film is, Dressed To Kill feels like a "placeholder" release ahead of a possible Carrie project, which would be a bigger release (for me at least). It stands to reason if they licensed DTK they may also have grabbed other DePalma titles, especially since both are controlled by the same studio. I certainly hope so.

I hope so because even though I'll buy this DTK Criterion, Carrie is in much more need of a remaster.

Out of the four De Palma films I've seen (Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, and Passion), Dressed to Kill is probably my favorite. I do like how Hitchcockian it is, and even though there are two obvious instances in which De Palma annoyingly borrows (and not even in an homage way) from Psycho, the film is still pretty good. Plus, the special features look pretty solid. I've pre-ordered this along with The French Lieutenant's Woman and Day for Night.

Yeah I know this, I actually own it. But technically it hasn't gotten a region A release. If anyone wanted to get it though they should, because like you said it's region free.

Given how niche Criterion movies usually are I don't see why you would single this one out as being a placeholder release.

Criterion are more likely to release the De Palma films which are more esoteric and which have more of a critical following like Blow Out and Dressed to Kill than those which have a more popular appeal. Dressed to Kill was financially successful but it was hugely controversial film at the time. Blow Out is considered by many to be De Palma's best film but it was a flop when it came out. Sisters might be next as they already released it on DVD. Carrie was a box office hit and it had a huge cultural impact and Criterion don't tend to release those films much.

More casual viewers of De Palma's work would probably opt for something more mainstream and better known like The Untouchables, Scarface or Carrie. But with hardcore De Palma fans (yes, we exist) Blow Out tends to come out very high up or on top. It's the quintessential De Palma film and it's obviously quite a personal film in the way it deals with film and the film making process.

Quentin Tarantino and the famous film of critic Pauline Kael are/were huge De Palma fans/supporters and they thought Blow Out was his best film and it has quite a reputation now. De Palma has always been the most controversial of the New Hollywood directors and with the possible exception of Carrie, none of his thrillers and horror films (which I and other fans regard as his most personal films) are universally beloved but most people who really are into his work, think Blow Out is his masterpiece or close to it. I tend to be back and forth between Dressed to Kill and Blow Out.

Criterion already released Carrie on laserdisc.

I like Blow Out a lot, but as far as De Palma conspiracy movies I actually prefer Snake Eyes.

Does this give it better odds at a Criterion BD upgrade?

Weirdo !

The first half is great, bit then it falls apart. Would love to see a directors cut which restores the hurricane ending which was cut.

Not sure. They released Carrie on LD in the early 90, that's quite a while ago and they never released it on DVD. I certainly wouldn't complain if they did.

I felt the same way about Snake Eyes. The movie became nonchalant and uninteresting, and the split screen scenes were overused.

I can't say for sure. I was just responding to the comment which seemed to imply that Carrie was the type of film Criterion doesn't release when, in fact, they have already released it on a previous format.

Criterion released more mainstream titles on Laserdisc in the 90s and in the early days of DVD, than what they release now on Blu-ray. With Laserdisc there was less competition and they covered a wider base. Now they are much more tightly focused on more esoteric titles. The company has changed, it happens over several decades.

That's like preferring Wise Guys to The Untouchables.
