That makes sense...NOT.
I agree somewhat. I think it's how annoying the glitch is in this case. If it was just a bunch of pixellation for a split second, I could deal with it. But when the video literally splits into Picture-in-Picture mode, that's pretty ridiculous.

I want the extended cut glitch free. I don't understand why that's hard to grasp.

OK.

The extended TV cut on Disc 2 of this new JP release is 4:3 pillarbox and it looks like trash. The 2006 Extended Edition DVD Steelbook and the German 2-Disc Collector's Edition, both widescreen, blow it away.

The theatrical cut on Disc 1 looks nearly identical to the U.S. Blu-ray. I'd say the HD master is the same - as HD Goofnut said - and the Japan Blu-ray probably has a higher bit rate encode.

There's really nothing new here except for the very nice packaging. This is probably going to be a pass for most people. Just wait for the inevitable UHD version.

Is the glitch on the German disc for the Extended edition, the Theatrical, or both?

And is the German theatrical uncut and the same picture quality as the US theatrical edition?

It's only on the Extended Edition, at about the 20 minute mark. Two seconds maybe.

Great, it looks like we are stuck with the U.S. DVD of the extended cut for a few more years at least.

To be more precise, you are stuck with it.

I'll gladly take the German release with its 2 second glitch -- and excellent HD/upscaling work, to say nothing of its 5.1 DTS MA track -- over sitting through the whole extended DVD in standard definition again.

Are either the German or Japanese discs extended cuts in HD? A lot of the information provided seems vague.

Japanese disc: 4:3, SD?

German disc: widescreen, SD-upscaled-to-HD?

The German disc has all the stuff that's the same from the theatrical cut in HD (quality comparable to the US Blu-ray) and all the stuff exclusive to the extended cut upscaled to HD from SD, like how Shout/AB presented the extended cut of Halloween on the Deluxe set last year.

I was surprised - it might actually be a tiny improvement because its AVC rather than VC-1. The bitrates are really high on PQ and AQ too.

And from what I could tell, the extended cut seemed to be exactly the same - I didnt see the actual extended bits too much but they seemed very good too. I really should watch it properly but just havent got time right now plus Ive got a new AV setup just arrived. Maybe Ill make Dune my first watch on the new system!

That means the very cheap German 2-disc blows the expensive Japanese one away.

And as I said above, I think the German extended cut PQ seems to be the same as the theatrical cut - very good indeed!

I think Ill give my US disc to my brother who is also a Dune fan (not as much as me!).

Nice. Just want to make sure, it does include the theatrical cut and the features from the U.S. disc?

And just to be sure. So this new german disc has a better transfer over the last ones that were also AVC, since those were worse than US VC-1?

Yes and no.

One disc has the theatrical cut and a trailer.

The other disc has the extended cut plus deleted scenes. So we dont get all the extras from the US disc. They probably had room on the theatrical disc too - strange.

Im not 100% about anything as I havent had time to compare them very well. It certainly looked the same as the US transfer to me on a quick comparison. As for better, I dont know. I remember it took me about one minute to realise the UK one was a piece of crap compared to the US one though!

Yep. And I suspect the difference will be miniscule either way. The German disc does have the higher bitrates though I think (and AVC) - well the theatrical cut certainly did.

Higher than US 30821 kbps?, that's impressive for such a long movie.
