Default Need help choosing a home theatre system for under $1000

I need some help selecting a home theatre system or putting together a home theatre system. I want to stay around/under $1000. I will be connecting the system to a PS3 (80 Gig) and a Panasonic TH-50PZ750U. After reviewing many threads I'm kind of leaning towards Onkyo, like maybe an Onkyo HT-SP908 system? Not sure. Is it better to buy a packaged system or to buy everything separately? I don't need the DVD player that comes with some packages. Would it be wiser to get a 7.1 system instead of 5.1? Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

The Onkyo 908 is actually the Onkyo 605 with Onkyo speakers.

So in essence, you may as well get the newer model 606 and just get better speakers.

Since these are 7.1 recievers, should I get 7 speakers and a sub or just 5 speakers and a sub? Thanks.

Which set of speakers is intended to be used for the "rear" or surround sound speakers? The Athena Satellite speakers?
Thanks

yes, the athena satellite speakers would be used as surrounds.

also:

speaker wire (14awg-16awg should suffice)

HDMI cables

Speaker Stand (you could probably find better stands elsewhere)

Default Well, I just did about the same thing last week!

...and thanks to everyone here, I ended up going with an Onkyo 705 (moved down from the 805 because I found a 3 month used Onkyo being sold in a divorce sale on Craigslist ), and then bought the Polk 6880 5.1 surround speakers. I also ended up buying an Ipod adapter for the woman, and a Tripplite Power conditioner to hook everything up.

I ended up running a single HDMI cable through the wall along with the power cord, and will hook everything else up to the Onkyo when I get my speakers later this week. Pictures, of course, to be forthcoming

So even if you go off Amazon.com or elsewhere you could easily go Onkyo 705 and Polk 6880's, or even go with Onkyo 605 and some decent speakers (see favorite speaker thread). After almost over dosing on information overload, I just thought the Onkyo/Polk combo was the best bang for the buck for me at this time.

Sorry for all of the questions, but here is another one. How does the Onkyo 606 receiver compare to the Denon AVR-2808CI? I may be able to get a Denon 2808 for only $500. If it's that much better than say the Onkyo 606, then it may be worth getting it for that price. Any thoughts? Would those same speakers that you recommended match up well with the Denon?

Also, what is your opinion of Klipsch speakers? I may be able to get a good deal on those as well.

Thanks
