Playstations wireless networking?

Thank you both for your input. I do manually assign the
PS3 an ip address but I am unsure how to open up all the ports the PS3 needs. Can some one help me with that? Or show me a website explaining what I need to know. Thanks again guys.

A little googlin' wouldn't have hurt in that regard but here's the ports you need to forward:

TCP, port range 5223-5223
UDP, port range 3478-3479
UDP, port range 3658-3658

These should all be forwarded to the IP address of your PS3. To do this you need to get into your router settings and look for an option to do port forwarding. That's about as standard of instructions as I can make without digging into a google search.

Hey thanks for this. I have all that set up for my 360 but totally forgot to do it for my PS3 (mainly for movies and only single player gaming so far).

One thing that occurs to me is that when my PS3 kicks on, it kicks anything and everything else off the network. They reconnect fine, but it's kind of weird, and it sucks in some cases (such as when I'm watching a movie on my PS3 but downloading a demo on the 360 or torrenting on my pc).

Anyone ever had that occur?

It's your router.

We had the same issue between Windows and Apple machines in our home. Whenever my wife would bring her Apple laptop home and connect wireless it would kick me off. When we got the PS3 the same thing would occasionally happen to it when she came home. If she put it into sleep mode to go do something and came back I would get kicked again..same thing would happen to her if I did that with my laptop .. but the Mac was much better at just auto re-connecting. XP usually required a re-boot or disabling/enabling the network card for me to re-connect. I could be on all day without issue so it was definitely a similar issue to what your describing.

We had a linksys at the time. Switched it out for an Apple router and the problem disappeared overnight. Search on this board .. I seem to remember now someone posting specific steps or a link related to something around this but it's a bit fuzzy.

Yep, that's why you assign each computer it's own unique static IP address.. Your router tends to try to assign IP addresses to devices that are already in use, which disconnects them. What happens then is all the IP addresses are trying to get reassigned. If you have your computer, 360, PS3 set to assign IP address automatically (in any combination) that is what is causing the temporary disconnect. By assigning the PS3, your 360, and your computer their own unique static IP address then there will not be a conflict because you've taken that logic away from the router.

If you assign static IPs to all of your devices and are still experiencing this problem then you do have a bad router. I've been using a Linksys WRT54G for about 5 years now and have never had a problem with lag, connections, conflicts, etc... but I may have just been lucky to get a good one.

They have static IPs assigned by me already. I have the same router you do, and mine is a couple of years old- so it's not the crippled newer WRT54G's. I'm not running any custom firmware on it, however.

I suppose it's possibly the router but I never had this problem prior to my PS3. My two wireless pc's, my Zune, and my 360 all connected fine (and still do). Only my PS3 does this.

I use a signal booster for my router. Actually, I have an old Airport express, and the new Airport Time Capsule. The Time Capsule is the main router, and the express uses the signal from the TC and relays it farther. That way i get signal throughout my house and it is all 70% or better.
Also make sure your network isn't lagging/bogged down. It is secure? Someone else could be using it if not.
I have a Wii, a PS3, an iMac, a PSP, 2 iPhones, 3 laptops, and a partridge in a pear tree all registered with my network, with address filtering, as well as having it closed, and I have no problems with it at all!
Everything works great so I never have to worry about loosing signal strength.

I have them assigned manually as well.

Another line of thought is the whole b vs g vs n protocols..historically some of the routers that have the latest and greatest n protocol didn't perform as well with older g protocol. That was usually in a mixed (b/g/n) environment .. but maybe the router is "optimized" by default to work with the widest number of devices and hence your g protocol the PS3 uses is suboptimal. Since you are only using the g protocol perhaps your router needs configured to only expect g protocol device or certain features should be turned off etc.

Just throwing out ideas.
