For those interested in the Directors cut and want to know more listen to the "lost" commentary. In short Robert Wise always considered the theatrical release unfinished due to the studio forcing a release date. The sound effects weren't even in the theatrical cut. Mr. Wise physically carried the rolls of film with him when he flew to the premier. In no way should it be seen as some quick cheap project done by hacks. Mr. Wise had to approve and was involved in every change made. It was he who said "keep the gold, it has balls" when shown the gold credits. As far as if there is a 4K transfer coming or has been done.... Robert Burnett tweeted last year that there will not be a 4K scan of TMP the directors cut done. This was following a meeting he had He did not go into it any further. I would love to see this and all the Trek films get the treatment they deserve. Though the theatrical release has its place in history, the directors cut is the completed vision of the film according to the director. |
