If it toned down the sillyness then yes.
I may be the only person who loves the score to that movie

I think you're correct on that one. I struggle to believe the fella who scored Leon composed the insipid GoldenEye score. A complete mess IMO. It's the major black mark against the film.

This is an interesting comment regarding WISEGUY. I hadn't heard of this 1987-89 series until you mentioned it here. So I looked it up, and yeah, the premise of the program is identical to the premise of LICENCE TO KILL. I always assumed EON was trying to capitalize on MIAMI VICE but maybe they were stealing more directly from WISEGUY. If true, it only reaffirms my conviction that Michael G. Wilson was the worst thing to happen to the franchise, until his twisted stepsister came along. I'll have to check out the program.

I've already mentioned to you elsewhere my criticisms of The Living Daylights.

I know it's unpopular nowadays to like Pierce's take on Bond but I'm glad Dalton didn't get a crack at Goldeneye. Written with him in mind or not, I don't think he would have made it as fun as Brosnan did. Granted, that's not what Dalton fans typically like in their Bond performances.

The first 30 minutes or so of TLD are above reproach, but then it devolves into a bad mix of Dalton edginess and Moore silliness. And the Joe Don Baker villain is a clown, hard to feel like he was ever much of a threat. Parts of the movie are aces but none of it comes close to the darker edge of Licence IMHO.

Daylights is a good bridge to the Fleming Bond darkness that kill introduced.
And so good Nolan (spits) ripped it off

And now I am watching it!

I thought Nolan's favorite was OHMSS; apparently he cribbed from it for the Inception snow sequence.

The sillyness in GoldenEye is not as bad compared to the other Brosnan Bond films.

Agreed that's why it shows it was was the only one not written for him

Nothing wrong with silliness in Bond movies. I know, another unpopular opinion. Just depends on how it's done and if it clashes too much with the rest of the picture.

He's talking about the pre-credits plane stunt in Licence to Kill, which Nolan cribbed for the plane stunt in The Dark Knight Rises.

And don't forget Koskov. He was the co-baddie of TLD with Whitaker and equally terrible.

Don't get me wrong, I'm an ardent Brosnan supporter just on the strength of GoldenEye; that's how highly I rate his turn in that particular film. But Dalton transported out of the lingering stylistic flourishes of the 80's, and put to work in the slightly cynical mid-90's era would've been great. He'd have been older and it could be argued, if there were complaints about the change in tone, that Dalton's Bond had become accustomed to his role as spy extraordinaire, hence his slightly more relaxed demeanour in a potential turn in GoldenEye. But, nah, Brosnan nailed it.

Oh man, you too?

I lost faith in that score during the early car chase scene that was played for laughs. Seemed iffy even to my 11 year old self.

A certain amount of cheesy fun is just part of Bond for me. I enjoy it, 99% of the time. Some of Moore's stuff went a tiny bit too far, but I don't think Living Daylights does. That's why I say TLD feels more like a Bond film compared to LTK, though I love both.

There is some of that, but feeling like a Bond film was not a great thing when the last film was View to a kill.

I'd like to have seen a 90's Bond film starring Dalton but Pierce nailed Goldeneye so I can't say I'd prefer to have seen anyone else in the role at that time.

If it makes you feel any better, I don't like Goldeneye's score, for the most part (especially on its own).

Even the opening gun-sight sequence seems wasted when it had that weird synth thing going on in the background. Were it not for Tina Turner and U2's theme I'd have been pretty disappointed on the aural side of things for GoldenEye.

You know, I'd like that line so much more if it actually sounded like Sean Connery. I've never understood why it sounds so different. Was it dubbed over by somebody else entirely? It takes me out of the film every time.
