Hurricane Rita was a nightmare evacuation. Probably the worst-handled evacuation in history. 5 million people all trying to leave at the same time. My parents live in Baytown and they evacuated to my aunt's house in Pasadena. That's around 20 minutes further inland. Cedar Bayou (feeds into Galveston Bay) is around a 2 minute drive right down the street from my parents' house. The Houston Ship Channel runs right by Baytown as well. My grandma is also in Pasadena with them. She lives in League City, which is further south, right by Seabrook. Seabrook is already under water, like Galveston. I don't know why ANYONE would stay in areas that are right on the water. The storm surge is going to be 20 feet or worse. That's incredibly dangerous. But Rita frustrated the hell out of people. More people died because of the evacuation than because of the storm. But that one veered off at the last second and hit western Louisiana.
