FSM started commissioning limited edition soundtrack CDs of classic film scores desired by collectors of film music. I thought this was the reason for the isolated scores. I think that also explains some of their early film choices, i.e. THE EGYPTIAN because of its score by Bernard Herrman and Alfred Newman. I think when they first released the Harryhausen films, they felt the attraction to their customer base was Herrmann, rather than Harryhausen.

I just posted about Solaris (2002) in the Criterion thread... Since TT has the rights to the Fox catalog, I'm wondering if the world will finally get a blu-ray edition of one of my favorite modern day sci fi films, directed by Steven Soderbergh?

I think its a fantastic and beautifully meditative film and a worthy remake of Tarkovsky's original, and one version of Solaris is never enough!

Why is it that Solaris (2002) isn't on blu-ray yet anywhere in the world? It stars George Clooney too! (a high profile actor).

Definitely can see this being a perfect addition to the Twilight Time catalog.

Could one of those traded titles be The 3 Worlds of Gulliver? Since TT can pull titles from MGM as well I wonder if they could get Jack the Giant Killer from 1962.

The deal was predated by a range of limited edition CDs (most notably Jerry Fielding scores) that were overseen by Nick Redman, when a limited edition formula was created to satisfy the musicians union not to ask for the kind of prohibitive reuse fees that would have been a worthwhile risk for a score for a new film but prevented the release of much older scores with limited appeal. In those early days the margins were so tight that they were mastered from duplicate material (some of it mono) provided by Fielding's widow rather than the studios' original masters because there was nothing in it for the latter to even look for them. That started to change when WHV wanted to include a remastered stereo CD of The Wild Bunch from the original studio sessions in their laser disc boxed set which was put together by Brian Jamieson.

Yes. You'll find that most TT titles are driven by the qualitiy of the scores rather than the movies, necessarily. Hence so many fabulous Goldsmith, Herrmann etc gems.

Screen Archives is a soundtrack enthusiast company.

I hope you're right. It does seem like a title that would be in their wheelhouse.

I was thinking about this movie the other day. It is one where the score is really solid as well. I would definitely pick this up.

To prolong the Solaris feeling... I wanted to share this simply gorgeous montage of music that accompanies sequences from the film. This is just a reminder of how much we need this out on blu-ray. Composer Cliff Martinez might have done his best work here, and not even Philip Glass can lay claim to this music.

Solaris on DVD has very obvious edge-enhancement too, which is annoying. Otherwise it looks pretty good (and sounds great). I very much hope it comes to BD, I love the movie and consider it vastly superior to the original.

Default Emperor of the North

Has anybody had any problems playing Emperor of the North? I ask because I've tried playing it twice just now and both times the picture freezes at about the 8:26 mark.

(*** FLASH *** I just hit the pause and play button again and it started playing. I might be in luck after all).

(*** FLASH #2 *** The picture just froze up again a few seconds further along and now it seems as if it's really stuck. My player is an old Pioneer Elite BDP-23FD. I recently had problems with my Spartacus blu-ray too, so it might be time to invest in a new player. But if anybody else has had problems with this blu-ray, it would be nice to know).

*****

EDIT: I tried playing Emperor of the North and Spartacus in somebody else's blu-ray player and they both work fine. So I can only conclude that my player is the problem. I'm one firmware update behind with my player. The latest update isn't available on Pioneer's website due to some kind of website maintenance going on (according to a Pioneer representative), so they will be sending me the firmware on a CD. Whether the firmware fixes the problem or not, I think it's time for me to start shopping for a new player.

Count me in as another one that wants Solaris on blu. Definitely one of my favorite science fiction movies. It would look and sound amazing in HD. Here's to hoping TT or someone else puts it out.

Okay, I just finished watching the movie by re-starting at the scene break immediately following the point where the blu-ray was freezing up (scene break #3). From there I was able to back up to about the 9:26 mark, where the blu-ray played flawlessly from that point to the end of the movie.

So does this sound like a player issue or a disc issue? Or could it be either?

Anyway, I'm glad I only had to miss about a minute of the movie. This was a blind buy for me. It's an interesting film that I'm glad I bought. I thought the picture and sound were great. I still need to listen to the audio-commentary.

Couldn't agree more, except on the remake bit (both are adaptations of the novel by Stanislav Tem). I would really go for a Solaris blu-ray. If TT gets it they should please try to retain the feature commentary with Soderbergh and James Cameron.

Hi, has anyone ordered from Twilight Time's new website? How does it compare to SAE? I'd like to directly give Twilight Time my money, but I'am wondering how their service is.

They ship sooner and come in a box. No problems. Not much else to say about it really.
