Default Sony BDP-S500 Specifications ?

Sony will be introducing their BDP-S500 at CEDIA in September. This will be their Flagship Unit. Does anyone have a sneek peek as to what the specifications and features will be? Will it be from the ES line ? [Jim]

With the launch date expect full profile 1.1 compliancy, along with the possiblity of 2.0 as well.

I am going to take a guess at:

-HDMI 1.3

-5.1 analog outs

-Ethernet port

-DD+/TrueHD 5.1 & DTS Decoders (Not DTSHD OR DTSHDMA) although it would be nice. but Sony doesn't seem interested lets cross our fingers.

-BD JAVA profile 1.1 capable

-x.v. COLOR

I believe your right on target! My contact in Sony said the construct will be in the ES line, a solid unit. We'll see at CEDIA in Denver.

Are you aware of any other manufacturers of Blu-Ray Players that will have a unit with 'ALL' the bells and whistles ?

I am also going to take a guess at an initial price of $699, with a price drop in november of it to $599 and the bdp-s300 to $399, ps3 to $499. I doubt we will se the ES moniker for a couple of years.

If this is an ES unit for less than $700, I'll probabyl pick one up if it's feature packed.

What about SACD? I'm not going to buy a Sony BD player unless it plays SACD stereo/multi-ch.

Cheers!

I asked the same question to my contact at Sony, "if the feature set of the Blu-Ray ES Model will include SA-CD?" . She will check for me. She said, last Monday, the ES Board at Sony met, regarding the feature set for the Blu-Ray Player and she is hoping to get the result notes of that meeting. If it's not too confidential, and she shares that info. with me - I'll post it here. [Jim]

BDLive, ethernet port (hopefully wireless), DTS, HDMI 1.3. If DTS is not ready it would be nice to know that the unit could support it via firmware upgrade over internet.

PS3 supports it really well right now but it requires HDMI 1.1 receiver.

I find it perplexing that it seems all of the new BD players coming down the pipe have DD+ decoding when, afaik, there isn't one title available on BD that has a DD+ track nor is there any plans to include one on forthcoming titles. So the feature of DD+ decoding on BD players, at least at the moment, is virtually useless. It's nice that it's there just in case/for future use, but it looks like it might be an unnecessary feature.

I doubt that it would go for less than $700 if an es line...unless...they omit CD playback again...

After reading other threads, I thought that it wasn't possible to integrate SACD with BD??? I'd be curious to hear about your findings as well...

An ES BD player would probably go for around $1300

Default Blu-Ray Disc and Super Audio CD Support

Quote:
Blu-Ray Disc and Super Audio CD Support
Another interesting question that the Blu-Ray launch raises is whether Sony thinks that Super Audio CD (SA-CD) and Direct Stream Digital (DSD) have a future. At the show, Sony officials noted that the audio output on their new STR DG-1000 receiver is actually marked not "CD" but rather "SA-CD/CD" as one clue to their thinking along with their recent enhancement to the SACD mastering format. I also heard once again that the Super Audio CD playback feature as well as Blu-Ray Disc playback both continue to be part of the feature package for the upcoming Sony Playstation 3 product due out this November. And I was told that SACD playback was coming to a future edition of the Blu-Ray hardware platform. So this will be an interesting area to watch.

I think a Sony ES Series player must play SACD. I'm not buying a reference disc player which doesn't support SACD playback.

Cheers!

Default Not exactly on topic...

I don't think that article necessarily guarantees that the ES line must include SA-CD support, but...

that link to High Fidelity Review shows a picture of David Hasselhoff humping for Blu-ray...

Doesn't that mean that Germans HAVE TO BUY Blu-ray?
