He's appearing in the sequel to Independence Day. I'm sure he can manage a role in Jurassic World 2; Chris Pratt will have a lot of the action scenes anyway.

They need a new owner right?
It could be him.

Why would Ian Malcolm buy into Jurassic World, given how much he was against the idea of genetically modified dinosaurs in Jurassic Park and was proven to be right?

Besides, I doubt we'll see Jurassic World fully operational again in Jurassic World 2. It'll likely be about militarised raptors.

I'd rather see Grant back, honestly. Or even Satler. They were fun characters with more than one "beat" to play. I had enough of Malcom with the two movies he was in.

They should bring back the kids from the original in some capacity, I think that could be a lot more fun and interesting than yet another adventure with Grumpy Grant or Perky Satler or "I told you so" Malcolm.

Alan Grant is okay but I don't think he's as interesting as Ian Malcolm. Ian is funny, charming and played by one of the best actors out there. The most important thing is that he's a likeable hero. Not quite as confident at the protagonist stuff as Alan (who seems very Indiana Jones at times a bit like Owen) but that's what makes him endearing IMO.

Personally, I couldn't care less about seeing Lex and Tim return. What could they really do with those characters that's interesting?

That's kinda my point -- we wouldn't really know what to expect with those characters. I'm not opposed to getting Grant/Satler/Malcolm back, but they're kinda played out at this point. At least with Lex and Tim, there's a little more room for the writers/director to work with and make things interesting.

Who's going to care about Lex and Tim returning, though? They're not Jeff Goldblum.

I don't want a militarized Dino approach.

Unless his wife or girlfriend get dragged near dinosaurs Ian Malcom wouldn't make any sense in the rebooted franchise.

Let's hope your wrong about the militarized raptors, I'm guessing that JW2 will be another Park but not on a Island this time.

That's the most preposterous and creatively bankrupt idea imaginable.

Probably true.

I can think of one way Ian could be useful: campaigning against the idea of using dinosaurs in war. He would be somebody Owen and Claire would visit to help them stop Henry Wu from militarising the raptors.

That's the only half decent idea I've seen for JW2. They really dug themselves in a hole with the crappy Raptor element.

Here’s what Trevorrow told Wired UK about what fans can expect in the sequel:

“[It will not be] just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island. That’ll get old real fast…I feel like the idea that this isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment. And when you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponize it and later on we found it could be used for energy. And this isn’t something necessarily that was in the book but is a seed that I wanted to plant in this movie, is that might be able to grow in more of these movies if they decide to make more of them, is: What if this went open source?

It’s almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?’ And Dr Wu says in the film, when he’s warning Dr Masrani, ‘We’re not always going to be the only ones who can make a dinosaur.’ I think that’s an interesting idea that even if we don’t explore fully in this film, there is room for this universe to expand. I shouldn’t use the word universe, because people will think we’re making a Jurassic World universe – we’re not.”

Toronto Raptors with actual raptors.

They're not as tall, but they have enough leaping ability.
