Default Nintendo prepping "Wii HD" for 2011?

http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/01/n...i-hd-for-2011/

Quote:
Look, we're talking three years from now, anything could happen by then. Singularity, jetpacks, you name it. So a teensy bit of HD graphics from Nintendo doesn't seem like too much to ask, does it? The filthy-rich company is purportedly showing off just such a Wii-followup to developers and publishers in the industry, who are nicknaming it "Wii HD" for the time being. A true sequel to the Wii, the followup will apparently stick with the core competencies (motion controls), while beefing up visuals (yes, please!), digital distribution, local storage and including backwards compatibility. The only hard evidence cited by What They Play, which originated the rumor, is that Nintendo's R&D spending has grown dramatically since the launch of the Wii. We're sure that cash is also being poured into the new DS and a number of other projects, but it's really not much of a stretch to figure Nintendo's working on a Wii successor two years into the Wii's highly-successful life cycle. All we've got to say is that a few of these improvements really shouldn't wait until 2011, and still others are long overdue.
yes another console rumor thread that was fast tho. tomorrow for the xbox 3 rumor?

this sounds pretty cool. my biggest complaint w/ the wii this generation is the lack of high defenition graphics.

The graphics don't bother me on the Wii, it's fine if they want to upgrade them in the future, but I knew what I was getting, great gameplay, not mind blowing visuals.

that's the thing though.... IMO the wii is very.... marginal in game play.

the only game i find myself playing is mario kart. and that's maybe once a month.

Lack of HD is what was holding me back for the Wii. This would be a nice upgrade and will probably get me to buy one.

Nintendo fans have forever defended the crappy graphics, let's go back to the older systems. I had my Amiga 500, much better graphics than the PC or the NES at the time. But people who had the NES were convinced that what they had was better anyway. 1991, Look at the Gameboy. I had a color LCD on my Atari Lynx, looked way better than the Gameboy's green dot matrix screen. Oh, but the Nintendo has "better games." I was like "are you kidding me, "do you know how old Tetris is?" and that was back then! It's the same today with the Wii, but I actually think with the Wii, they have something that's just a little bit different. I like it. But the graphics are way behind the times!

I have friends that aren't gamers and they come over to play bowling, boxing etc... The most fun I've had is with the free sports games. It's really the only game the wife will play except soul calibur IV on the PS3

It's enjoyable and a good group exercise when guests are over. Now, when I play 'my games' on the ps3, 360, or pc, they look fantastic - as they should. However the overall experience is too different in my mind to compare the wii to the others.

I have a Wii but really the softare library pales in comparison to the PS3 and 360. I'd rank them in terms of software

PS3 >>>360>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Wii

That said I'd love to have an HD zelda, mario, side scrolling metroid, etc with 5.1 at the minimum, hopefully lossless though

Great graphics do not equal a great game, as we have seen time and time again. The Wii may have sub par graphics to the other makers, but gameplay on the Wii is far superior to the others. There is more than enough room in the market for the Wii to coexist peacefully with the other, if you don't like the graphics, you don't have to buy it, but considering its kicking both Sony and M$'s butt, apparently they are doing something right.

i only partly agree. the wii only has a handful of games worth overlooking the bad graphics. apart from those few games, the wii is all hype and gimmick and only kills sony and microsoft because non-gamers are buying it. i bet software sales arent close to what they would like, tho with hardware profits so high, who cares lo.

but you do have a point, i play nes games all the time

i agree w/ this.

also another reason it's outselling the ps3 and 360 is because average consumers are buying these things thinking they're getting a "next generation console" and being the cheapest of the "next generation consoles" they automatically look to these. (i understand the 360 has a 199 price tag now but hasn't always been cheaper than the wii) that being said, people who haven't played a video game since pong are all the sudden seeing these 3d graphics and they can move their controller and see it happening on the screen so they tell their friends (and the media has a huge part in this too) and their friends go out and buy it because it's so "revolutionary" while us people who have owned a gaming console every generation look at it like.......what's the big deal?? there's no fun games that aren't on the other systems w/ better graphics.

i can't bring myself to buy madden/ncaa on the wii over the PS3. i can't bring myself to buy Star wars:TFU on the wii over the PS3. i own a wii but only own 3 games for it.(not including the free game that came w/) i own a ps3 and own about 15 games for it (not including psn games) do you kinda see what we mean by it's really just a gimmick.... it's human nature to want something that they can't have. that's why it's selling so much.

i agree w/ xtop i'm sure software sales are horrible on this.

Sure graphics don't make a great game but they make a great game more enjoyable if the graphics and sound are better... Similar to DVD versus Blu-ray.

As for far superior gameplay, well it depends on the game. There are far more games that I enjoy on the PS3 and even 360. For example I haven't played an action game on the Wii that has nearly as good as gameplay as Uncharted.

Bottom line is I want both and would have gladly payed another $100 or more if need if it would have given me a Wii games like Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda but with PS3 graphics and sound. Of course I don't think Nintendo would have sold nearly as many systems but that doesn't change my personal wants.

I think some of the games for the SNES and N64 have better graphics then the Gamecube

One thing y ou have to keep in mind about nintendo too, is that there are a LOT of games for the Wii that are aimed at young kids (8 & under). Xbox has a few that are suitable, and PS3 has even less.

This is a BIG selling point for a lot of parents who are thinking about getting somethign their kids can play that they can enjoy too, and this is certainly helping sales. I know a few parents who got their kids a wii last year because the amount of games that were suitable for children were few and far between on the MS & Sony systems (not counting the PS2).

I see a lot of parents with young kids at Target & Walmart hovering around the Wii section. Lots of options for them, whereas stuff like GTA4, Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War, etc fills the rack for the 360 & PS3.

Mario Galaxy is badass no doubt. It doesn't even need Wii controls to play.
