Difference is Jones is a pretty nothing character without Ford. Ford is what made him a legend. Bond is a great character no matter who plays him. Also, Connery was replaced 6 years after his first appearance. We only know of Ford as Jones for 3 decades. It's a little more ingrained into people's minds than Connery was.

Isn't that a more far-reaching comparison tho? Indiana Jones has been Ford in the publics collective memory since 1981. Connery was replaced at 7 years, if using Lazenby. They never let one actor "linger" too long before another stepped in. For 34 years we've only known Harrison Ford in the role of Dr. Jones.

Other examples could be Superman, Batman, Spider-man, The Joker, and Mad Max.

Comic books don't seem fair either. You've got different source material and versions that could be made. Indiana Jones doesn't have this benefit does he?

Once again, none of the actors playing these characters did so for 3 decades. Well I guess you could say Gibson in Max but Fury Road didn't really need Max. Could have been any character. The whole point is Ford has been Jones since 81. 35 years. No one else has played an incarnation of the character. It is his. Always will be. Have him pass the torch or something to someone not named Shia and see how it works out. at least try it.

Especially if they adapt the Bantam Books and the newer ones. Also the Marvel and Dark Horse comics, unused video game ideas including the video games. No idea if Sophia Hapgood would even be featured in Indiana Jones 5 or any Indy feature which takes place either in 1939 or 1947.

Nope. You're absolutely incorrect and forgot Sean Patrick Flannery, Corey Carrier, and George Hall who was in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles/The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones. There's also the different voice actors portraying Indiana in the video games.

To be honest, I heavily considered Craig Scheffer, especially after watching A River Runs Through It, could've played an excellent younger Indy if his movies as the character were set from 1922 (Think that's when Peril at Delphi takes place?) to at least 1930. Well, in the 1990's though if it were an alternative to the more educational aforementioned The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.
After Indiana Jones 5 which should be Harrison's last portrayal as Indiana Jones, (At least we have 1935 Temple of Doom, 1936 Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1938 The Last Crusade, 1950 Mystery of the Blues, and 1957 Kingdom of the Crystal Skull), I honestly wouldn't mind if similar to Mystery of the Blues they'd possibly get Harrison to do a voice over and start recollecting different adventures. Then have some actors be Indiana for a handful of movies which would be set in a certain timeframe of a couple or more years in Indys life.
As mentioned you also have the Bantam Books. Majority of which are damn good while a couple are give or take. (Yes I own them all.)
Indiana Jones Adventure Timeline

Harrison Ford in Mystery of the Blues which he shot at the time while he was also making The Fugitive in 1993.

Yes, Indiana Jones has many comics from both Marvel and Dark Horse Comics. All of which are available in the Omnibus', including The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones, but not Tomb of the Gods from my recollection. Even from scrapped or deemed unprofitable video game concepts. Those are Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny (AWESOME cover by Hugh Fleming!) and Indiana Jones and the Iron Phoenix. No, I don't like Dave Dormans art style very much.

To be honest I've no definitive idea whether or not Disney/Lucasfilm has jettisoned any of these stories same as they did with the old STAR WARS EU and rebranded it as LEGENDS.

I don't really grant that as material. Christopher Reeve was Superman forever in the collective public conscious, but that doesn't mean no one can ever make a great Superman movie again. It all comes down to casting the right person and writing the right movie.

I love Ford, and it will be extremely hard to move on from him, but there's nothing stopping them other than execution.

It may not be all that enlightened of me, but I don't think I want to move on from Ford. And I know the world keeps turning, but to this day I resolutely refuse to acknowledge that Jaws had any sequels, so I know I can compartmentalize enough to ignore Chris Pratt or Bradley Cooper or whoever they get for a knock-off.

The difference with Bond- and the precedent that those movies set- was that there were more written stories to tell from the creator's own hand, even if the actors had exhausted their runs....

And I've seen the argument made that the only good ones are the ones based on the original material. Certainly Craig's Bond would fit that mold, though that's probably an unpopular opinion.

I can't agree that matters because many great Bond movies are not based on Flemming books, many middling Bond movies are based on his books, and in the end none of them are really that adherent to the books anyway.

In the end it seems impossible to replace him until someone does it well. Whether that ever happens I don't know, but it's far from impossible.

For me Christopher Reeve will always be Superman. After reading his bio Still Me turned out he really was Superman. Do like Man of Steel and thought Cavill did a good job.

Think Ford do part 5 and have the character Shortround back. Because of his love for Indy he started using Indy's last name. Toward the end of the film have Indy die some how and Shortround upset you know over it. He takes Indys hat off and puts it on in honor of him.

I've always felt that what makes Harrison Ford seem irreplaceable as Indy is that he is, in fact, one of the three co-creators of the character.

Ford was there from the inception of the character and so many of the character's traits, right down to the scar on his chin, come from him.

So, in a sentimental way, I think that as long as the original creators are still active, they should be allowed to do their thing, finish their creation. I mean, Lucas has retired, so he's out, but as long as Spielberg and/or Ford still want to do it, I say let them.

Of course, I hope Spielberg and Ford finish strong, but even if they don't I hope they get to finish it their way.

There'll be plenty of time for reboots, recasting, and reimaginings later.

I wonder how they will explain Mutt away. Discuss his death off screen? Recast? I hope they get Marion back, anyway.

You don't think my runaway lawnmower idea works?

Hmm, well how about this?

'Mutt' has just gotten engaged to his girlfriend (Ricki Lake).
