All 6 films are in dire need of 4K remasters with all available official versions.

Yeah, well, at the rate that we're going, that seems about as likely as world peace any time in the near future.

If the Wrath of Khan remaster sells really well they will do more of them. The consumer is always the boss in these things.

Default new transfer questions

I have the 2009 collection http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Orig...A2L77EE7U53NWQ

What is different in this 2016 collection ? Only thing I can tell is there taking away the Summit bonus .

Any directors cuts ? What since 2009 has been updated ? WOK has a better bluray then this old 2009 collection ? There's so much it's getting confusion .

Why don't they just remaster all 6 , Why put out a collection and maybe update 1 movie and there still these longer directer cuts from only dvd's . AGH!!!

It's just a repack with the same old transfers from 2009.

Just WOK is getting a 4k Remaster. The rest of the films are just the same discs form the 2009 film collections.

Not jumping on the 4K bandwagon yet, but just out of interest: other than the 4K remaster, is it basically the same as the WOK that was included in http://www.amazon.com/Star-Trek-Orig...ure+collection ? Any new commentaries, special features, etc? I already have the Original collection, so I don't want to double-dip on WOK just because of 4K, as I can just wait it out if Paramount decides to do all the Star Trek movies in 4K and I probably will have a 4K TV by then

You should go check out the thread...this is going to be the directors cut with a ton of special features. It's basically everything anyone reasonable could want in a double dip.

1) There did seem to be one new video feature, when I checked.

2) New 4k scan is a big deal and having a 4k television is irrelevant. It's all about the master that gets put on the disc and a new 4k scan on a blu-ray should be stunning. A UHD disc would only be a subtle improvement on that.

I assume this Italian release artwork (for July's Steelbook release) is just a placeholder?

In fairness I love the Star Trek films well most, the first film I find quite boring.

It's definitely the worst of them all for me.

I'd much watch stupid and silly than boring myself. Nothing worse than a film that sucks the life out of you. That said I actually like TMP. The score is the greatest by far of them all. The effects are tremendous. It's the most "cinematic" IMO of every Trek film in terms of its budget, cinematography and scope...and sure it's kinda cold and undercooked, but its positive attributes seem to improve as time goes on.

For me it's:

I love each of them in their own way though. All six are among my most watched films of all time.

In defense of 5:

For starters, it was the classic "Trek" reborn and a return to "business as usual". No larger plot arc of dead Spock, ship destroyed, or being drummed out of service. After the events of the previous films, we were finally getting back to "strange new worlds" and Enterprise life as it used to be. With partial exception to TMP, I'd challenge that any other of the six did that.

Second, along those same lines, the plot is actually quite good: A malfunctioning Enterprise is hijacked by a renegade Vulcan who is searching for God, while a Klingon commander looking to make a name for himself is in hot pursuit. On paper, it sounds perfect. Tweak the bad effects shots, the editing, and revamp the ending with some creative re-shoots and you've got a much better flick.

Third, to borrow from Harve Bennett, the family is celebrated in 5. It really is about the "trinity" and the extended family and their relationships with each other. And for all the occassional silliness, each of them has a wonderful moment, individually or together, that really stands out. "We've been caught in a . . . We've been caught in a blizzard."

Lastly, the music score is killer. Outside of TMP, arguably Goldsmith's best "Trek" score.

Yes, it is clearly the worst of the original six. But the older I get, the more I really enjoy and appreciate 5.
