Agreed. Despite its shortcomings, I'd rather watch 5 than most of the TNG films. At least it's not dull (unlike, say, Nemesis)

I've never disliked Trek V and given the push to get the movie made and released for the summer of '89 had to been a daunting task for first time director Shatner. Although I do think Paramount marketed this movie wrong as well. For example the teaser poster:

TREK V.jpg

to me the tagline suggests 'action oriented' not so much human drama as the final film played. Of course the cast interaction has always been the benchmark for the show and the films but 3 years from the highly successful Voyage Home was a tough act to follow. But also back to the marketing and the fact that Trek V got release within a week of Batman '89 and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was released shortly after that in June. Had this been released in the fall, it may have been better received.

I largely agree with you here. I really don't mind that roughly middle 45 min of the movie. The opening and ending needed total revamping as they had some semi-cringe moments for me.

I've always loved the character moments in V, some of my fondest memories of the three of them together are from that flick.

If I had a gun to my head this would be my order of preference, though I love them all in one way or another:

I see most people have the forth movie around the middle of their list. They were definitely able to pull off the humor and light heartedness of the movie.

Speaking for myself, here's my list:

2/3/4 - Yes, count it as a trilogy. 2 is arguably the best Trek movie, 4 is the fun one, if dated now and I will always plead for 3 being better than is given credit for
6 - This one might rank higher if the script were a bit tighter and the casting better.
1 - yes, it's the Slow Motion Picture, but between the score and V'jer plot twist at the end, I just can't rank it lower than this.
5 - Ah, our unloved cellar dweller. Metaphorically. The tone is just so off, the story too much of a throw back after the Bennett trilogy and all this fuss to find God? This is dreck and for me, the worst of any of the Treks.

I'm so glad they made The Undiscovered Country after the mess that is The Final Frontier.

Having re-watched them all recently my opinion still hasn't changed on it. I do like Jerry Goldsmith's score though.

I like all of them, apart from 5. I only like one of the TNG films, First Contact, which I would have as my second favourite Trek film overall.

Last Crusade came out in May, not June, May 24. Batman came out June 23, a month later. Star Trek V came out exactly 2 weeks in between (not 1 week), on June 9. It had plenty of time to be "better received", if the movie had actually been any good.

With partial exception to TMP, I'd challenge that any other of the six did that.
None of the others had the indefensible though:

Kirk falling from a cliff with a sudden stop that didn't kill him
Chekov blowing on a communicator to simulate stormy weather
A broken down POS Enterprise that for some reason even makes a non-attached electronic clipboard physically break.
A three breasted cat lady
Kirk lifting and throwing said three breasted cat lady into a fishtank
Uhura's naked dance
American Gladiators Klingons
Leaving one desert location for ANOTHER desert location (that from space doesn't even look like a planet)
A 10-Forward like location with no corresponding windows on the ship
Reusing a shot of Kirk clenching his fists at the Bird of Prey seconds later
Surviving a nearby photon torpedo explosion a few yards away
Shuttle that endlessly skids to a stop on about 100 feet of landing bay
Scotty hitting his head like a Three Stooges outtake
Klingon Captain saluting Kirk yet Kirk had done nothing to earn his respect
Spock rocket boots
Spock retrieves his rocket boots from where (during turboshaft climb)?
Deck 78
VFX somehow worse than TOS done 20 years earlier

Exactly the same for me. I love 1 and 2 equally, just depends on what mood I'm in to watch.

I can't understand the disdain towards TMP, unless you grew up on Next Generation or something I guess, and find the slower pace too foreign to the rest of the ST universe. For me, the slow pace and the long drawn out visual and aural scenes are what I love about it. One of my favorite science fiction films, plus it's Star Trek: The Motion Picture on top of it! Spock going into VGER is the best.

Nah, I love me some TMP. It'll get ragged on until the end of time ("The [Slow] Motion Picture" etc) but I've always found it fascinating, even the much maligned theatrical version. I spoke up for 3 earlier in the thread but it's the filler between Khan and Voyage Home in that little trilogy, I wouldn't revisit it as a solo mission whereas I definitely do that with TMP.

I don't hate any of them, but if TMP was on TV I wouldn't catch myself watching it for like 40 mins like I do with the others

I did that with TMP when Channel 5 showed it a while back, I just couldn't tear myself away.
