I gave "Cutter's Way" a watch this week and thought it was excellent. It's a very hard film to pin down. It's kind of a mix of film noir, suspense, melodrama, and even comedy. Jeff Bridges and John Heard are both on top of their games as a playboy gigolo and his crippled, alcoholic Vietnam vet buddy respectively. The film is set against the beautiful backdrop of Santa Barbara, which provides a sharp contrast to the deep web of corruption that they uncover as the film goes on. Heard really steals the show in this film. It's hard to imagine this is the same guy who played the dad in "Home Alone" when you're watching the film. Although the film was released in '81, it definitely has the feel of a New Hollywood era movie, despite being slightly removed from the peak of New Hollywood filmmaking. Another underseen gem that Twilight Time has added to its catalog.

James Cagney was quite a fan of the film and agreed to star in what was going to be Ivan Passer's next film, The Eagle of Broadway, playing an ageing Bat Masterson when he was a newspaper editor, but the failure of Ragtime and Cutter's Way at the boxoffice and difficulties getting Cagney insured for a leading role led to it falling through.

Interesting. It's a real shame that Passer's career kind of stalled out after the financial failure of "Cutter's Way". It's a fantastic film, but has such an odd, indescribable tone. I didn't mention it in my initial post, but the performance of Lisa Eichhorn as Heard's wife is unbelievably good. A lot of actresses would take that performance to a real emotionally charged place, but her performance is very reserved and, as a result, mesmerizing. Every moment she's on screen, she's entrancing. It's one of those films that constantly goes in the opposite direction of what you expect.

Yeah I meant overnight or whatever. It ain't gonna sell out in a few days or weeks unless it's 80's horror. Everything else you can wait a bit. That's all I meant.

The following was posted on the Facebook feed for Cinema Retro magazine:

From Cinema Retro Editor-in-Chief Lee Pfeiffer: "Recorded three separate commentary tracks for forthcoming Blu-ray releases: "Tony Rome" starring Frank Sinatra (with Eddy Friedfeld, Paul Scrabo and Anthony Joseph) and Paul and Eddy and I on Paul Schrader's "Hardcore" with George C. Scott and the 1973 crime flick "The Laughing Policeman" starring Walter Matthau and Bruce Dern. It was a back-to-back triple feature that took most of the day, but was a lot of fun. "Tony Rome" and "Hardcore" will be released by Twilight Time, "Laughing Policeman" by Kino Lorber. Thanks to Anthony Joseph for his insights into Sinatra's music in the 1960s and to Bruce Dern for providing me with some last minute anecdotes about "The Laughing Policeman".

Does that mean that HARDCORE will have two separate audio commentary tracks? We've already heard that director Paul Schrader has recorded an audio commentary track, and now this report of a Lee Pfeiffer audio commentary track.

The Train did have a DVD release, it just sold out. I own the DVD and wasn't moved to buy the Blu-ray. The Encore edition will have to be real special for me to want to pull the trigger.

Fantastic film though and a big reason why Burt is one of my all-time favorites.

It's back in print on DVD, although by Kino Lorber Studio Classics rather than MGM.

They could massively improve it by getting the extras from Arrow's version. I doubt that will happen, though.

That's an example of something I think is worth upgrading to blu-ray if you have it on DVD. Unlike some kind of chamber drama, it's got a lot of very impressive visuals.

Any Canadians not receiving their orders from SAE lately ? I ordered Go Tell the Spartans and Philadelphia from SAE on May 25 and it's yet to arrive. Contacted SAE and they say I should contact Canada Post or Customs. If I don't receive this, it's $68 out the window and I'm not ordering from them ever again.

I'm assuming that you've received a shipping notice from them already? If so, there should be a tracking number. The tracking number will not track within Canada but it will indicate when the item has arrived in the country.

Default Summer Lovers

I watched Summer Lovers last night for what I thought was going to be the first time. But after viewing it, I could swear I saw it somewhere before ... either in a theater back in the 80s or maybe a late night HBO/Showtime viewing (also in the 80s). In any case, I enjoyed it, even if I couldn't really relate to it. I mean, that never happened to me in my lifetime. Good summertime movie ... then again, winter might work too.

Yes received a shipping notice a while back. The tracking number should work on the Canada Post site as well, but it comes up as not found, as if they never received it. On the US tracking it says that it's in the destination country as of June 12

Just received an email from TT about July pre-orders and they mentioned there's less than 80 copies left of Mysterious Island and expect it to sell out within a week. Anyone who's waited to order it probably should jump on it now.

What about First Men in the Moon? I thought that one was in low quality BEFORE two sales came along. I'm astonished it hasn't sold out yet.

No word on First Men in the Moon but last I heard there were less than 200 copies. Must not have warranted a red alert like MI.....yet.

As of the LQA posted on their Facebook page of 6/21 (and posted here in this thread's initial post) there were fewer than 250 copies available.

Not many recent posts about the SAE sale. I intended to get three titles, as the Criterion 50% event is just around the corner, but ended up ordering five... With less than three days left, I hope everyone got what they wanted. These $10 TT discounts are fantastic.
