I made a small mistake this morning due to a high level of excitement. The frame I published probably looked a tad washed out on your screen. I forgot to convert it from "Cinema Colorspace" to the "Web Colorspace". My apologies for that. It now shows properly with the desired gamma.

It still looked awesome: so grainy, so filmic.

So we're not getting the theatrical version because someone is sitting on it, or we're not getting the theatrical version because it is lost?

As far as I'm aware, the producer of the film, Richard P. Rubenstein, owns the rights to the theatrical cut now and wants silly money to license it again to anyone who'd care to release that particular edit. Plus he's doing a 3D version of it, apparently.

If the Argento cut has the cast commentary off the Anchor Bay Ultimate Edition DVD, I'd buy the BD; it's the only reason I'm hanging on to the DVD.

Just give me the Extended Cut/Directors Cut remastered and I'll be happy.

Wow. The Happinet theatrical version looks horrendous compared to the European cut and even the super-weird-colored Arrow version? I guess I haven't been keeping up with these things. I hope the Australian version doesn't look like that (EDIT: Oh, the site covers that, apparently it is identical to the Arrow?)! This new 4k thing sure looks a lot better in comparison to those than it did by itself.

Even though it's "just" an IP, there's still plenty more fine detail there than any of the other versions Danny's compared it to. It's as I keep saying: a competent scan makes all the difference.

I don't think even they've got enough money to convince Rubinstein to part with the rights, ol' Ahab has to go hunt his 3D whale.

Perhaps if Criterion and Shout and Arrow all joined forces they could make something happen, they could have one version of the movie each

Shout is doing these quite expensive limited editions right now. Wonder if they will sell well enough to push them toward an expensive edition of this to cover the licensing cost with NO cheaper option. That would be a damn interesting experiment they would be silly to gamble on but cool for me!

It's unfortunate that they didn't recoup some of their 3D investment with a theatrical release a few years ago, when Walking Dead was white hot. I don't see the point of investing all that money and then not doing anything with it.

The film deserves so much better.

Contact Rubeinstein to release the movie in selected theaters already then have Criterion or Shout or Arrow to do a blu-ray.

Mate, I've said it before: I adore this film and I'd crawl over broken glass to get a proper restoration of it, so if a label paid Rubinstein's hefty toll and then passed it onto consumers then that's fine with me. I'd gladly pay silly money for a remastered Dawn boxset with all the cuts having spangly new transfers and 17 different slipcases. I wouldn't need any new extras either.

Think of the cheap tat they could include to justify it! "And all that tat..."

I find that word amusing and want to spread it's use to the US.
