Maybe they'll be a little smarter this time around and spend some dough to ensure that they have a solid script to work with.

Then again it is hollywood....

Yeah, I sincerely doubt it. There hasn't been a "smart script" from this series since the first film, and that one was adapted by the author of the novel, who is now dead.

Ahh, OK. Gotcha.

These summer blockbuster budgets keep getting bigger and bigger and we never see anything new. It's the same ole same ole, time and time again. You would think after the poor box office receipts from this past summer the studios would have learned their lesson, but I guess not.
Again, JW made nearly $1.7B worldwide. The studio DID learn their lesson: people like the franchise and paid a ton of money to see it.

JW2 will probably make over $2B when all is said and done. Let me ask you a question: if you could spend $260M to make $2B would you do it?

I wonder if they'll actually spend any money on crafting a decent screenplay/story.

Wowza, that's a lot of money. I guess it makes sense though, as according to rumors it's going to be on a global scale this time around.

I'm one of them. We don't have nearly enough even halfway decent dinosaur movies, I'll take all the Jurassic Park I can get.

Yep, while I do kind of feel like these budgets have become kinda ridiculous, obviously they wouldn't throw this much at it if they didn't feel confident about its potential success. They may be a bit overconfident though, as I'm not convinced JW's mega-success means the sequel will be quite as successful. JW was the first Jurassic Park film in nearly 15 years, that always builds interest for these franchises. Now that we've had JW, the public's hunger has been satiated to some degree. But it will make money, for sure, I just hope they don't expect too much.

You may very well be right that my $2B prediction is a bit high. OTOH, this was a very popular film. Even someone like myself, who didn't like it upon first viewing -- well, I thought it was mediocre, not bad -- has come to really appreciate it after a few more viewings. Actually, flipping around HBO, I can't even tell you how many times I've watched the last 15-20 minutes.

But yeah, we both agree that it will be profitable in the end.

Oh, and one thing to consider is how much the cost of making these sorts of films is increasing. I mean, sure, $260M might be a bit over-the-top. But I would love to see the breakdown sometime. How much cast cost, how much CGI, how much all the stuff really cost. I know that's not going to happen, but I would really like to see that -- especially for a film like this.

You should make nice-nice with the Universal bean counters working on this film.

Exactly!!

A successful business model is not about the cost, it's about the profit. When you can make nearly 8 times your money with very little risk... you do it! A complete failure in this case would be only making $1B, a mere $740m profit... poor bastards would only make a 300% profit.

If an investor could almost guarantee a stock would quadruple over a 2-4 year period they would buy that stock in a heart beat. That is all these studios are doing with big budget franchises. They are betting on an almost sure thing where failure still results in huge profits.

As a mega Jurassic Park fan, I'm just glad Hollywood has confidence in the Jurassic property again. From everything I've read so far, it really seems like they are trying to do more in terms of story. I hope so, but either way, dinosaurs at the movies makes for a fun trip to the movies.

June 22, 2018 can't come soon enough!

Clearly. Good observation.

But seriously, I don't get when people complain about budgets. They aren't spending their money. Well, I guess the person complaining could be a shareholder, but then go to a meeting and complain to them -- though when movies are pulling in $1.7B worldwide ...

I just realized J. A. Bayona is attached to direct.

This might be interesting after all.

I'll keep an eye out.

UPDATE: A reliable source in the Jurassic World camp has revealed to us that J.A. Bayona did not reveal the budget for Jurassic World 2. In fact, development hasn’t even reached a point where a budget can be finalized, though our source said that the budget will not be anywhere near $260 million. Despite the fact that this was a tangible print source, the information about the budget was either misinterpreted or fabricated. Our original story from the morning of September 19th follows.

Agreed. I liked Jurassic World, but I was taken aback by how cliche the dialogue was at times in that film. I also did not like the mom character who for some reason will get emotional on the fly over nothing really which became awkward and annoying.

I mean I think he thing that got JW so much $$$ was the fact that it was a realized park and for people who'd been following the franchise for what amounts to 20+ years... To see it come to life, with good CGI, a semi interesting plot [aside from some WTF moments, and the high heel running]... Made for the perfect whirlwind of summer nostalgia that got butts in the seats..

I feel like this second time around they'll either need to hit the story out of the park, or just have something amazing going on, otherwise I wouldn't be shocked if the money this rakes in is simply good to avg.

I wouldn't expect if its just a rehash or jumble of ideas to hit the same home run the first one did.

Funniest thing posted on this forum in a while.

You really can't blame them though. What did people praise about JW? The insanely over-the-top cheesefest ending with tons of dinos fighting. So what are they going to triple-down on in the next one? That stuff, obviously. I expect it to be a schlockfest of the highest order.

I don't think people praised it for that reason at all lmao.. Again it was about nostalgia and hit the right buttons, and yeah entertaining, thats the first time I've ever heard of a "cheese-fest" setting the highest grossing box office record

Nothing wrong with hoping for a solid script for a big budget blockbuster. One would think that given the amount of money they're spending, they could throw the writer(s) a dime and help produce a solid story so they can not only garner financial but also critical success.

Then again the general public likes stupid mindless shit like this and people keep paying for it...
