In other words, everybody cheered at the big moments, but it wasn't full out Rocky Horror Picture Show with people yelling at the screen throughout. When Carrie went on her rampage, they flipped on all the red lights in the theater and the audience went bonkers. The panel was good, but I thought Bryan Fuller was a little annoying. I did learn a few new things, but I'm curious to see if they're repeated on the blu-ray interviews. As to the movie, I thought it looked fantastic. I didn't have any issues with the framing, and actually some of the split screens looked very slightly lopsided to the other side, so it seemed balanced overall. I can see how someone not used to seeing real film grain might find it to be a grainy presentation, but this is the level of grain I'm familiar with. It didn't look wonky like some of the grain in other presentations I've complained about. Assuming the DCP matches the blu-ray, I should be very happy.
I was there too! Had an awesome time as well, and even got a selfie with P.J. Soles. No such luck with the goddess Nancy Allen but at least got to see her from afar!

I like the sped-up tux scene. It seemed to me to just sort of be mocking the whole prom enterprise, like stripping the humanity out of it and just showing a bunch of buzzy little insects going about their insect business.

Does anyone know where I could find a criterion LD rip commentary over the net? There's nothing on original trilogy.

I posted this earlier:

I wish it were an audio file, but I guess it's better than nothing.

Just watched it, amazing stuff from Shout. The source itself is so tricksy that it's never going to look amazeballs in a purely objective sense, what with the prevalance of diopter shots, the zoom-ins & split-screens & dissolves that are all at the mercy of the optical process of the time, plus the foggy, filtered kinda look that the movie has in general. But Shout have managed to beautifully capture the exact kind of texture and detail that I'd expect from such a show, it puts Universal's recent AAWIL restoration to shame in respect of looking wholly film-like and not digitally processed to hell and back.

The colour is fantastic too, gone are the one-note orangey skin tones so common to older transfers and replaced with much more variation and depth, while the primaries are absolutely gorgeous. Yes, there IS something of a greeny tinge here and there, but quite a bit of the movie takes place under fluorescent lighting, like in the principal's office early on (you can see the light fitting when it cuts to the low angle of Carrie looking down at the ashtray).

I've mentioned before that I think there's something of a trend these days to leave in more of that green fluoro cast in the colour, NOT that it's completely untouched as it'd look greener than Kermit the Frog's undercrackers otherwise, but they certainly don't dial it out completely as was done in the old photochemical days. It's not a problem for me whatsoever, but YMMV.

If there must be a niggle (there must, there must!) it's that I fully agree with RAH that the scratches (and not just in the main titles) should've been dealt with, as if you're doing a 4K restoration from the original negative then you're stepping into the big leagues. I've said several times before that Shout can't be expected to turn in soup-to-nuts "archival" restorations with their new in-house transfers because it's not their mandate, especially when using IP's, but this is a game-changer for them and their usual MO of leaving in massive scratches ain't gonna cut it no more. However, 'tis but a small complaint as this is still a stunning piece of work.

The film itself is a masterpiece, of course. There are few sights in the annals of cinematic horror so exquisitely chilling as Sissy Spacek's Carrie, drenched in blood and about to get her revenge thang on.

Groovy, can't wait to watch my copy! I've amazingly only ever seen Carrie once before, and that was many, many years ago. I'd planned to get the older Blu-ray but then this edition was announced, so this will be a fantastic way to revisit this classic now. I really am LOVING all these awesome remasters we're getting right now.

I like it too...the way it comments on itself; it knows the audience knows where that endless conversation about ruffles is going, so why not get on with it? It also drops neatly into place in the context of De Palma's stylization, which already features slo-mo, split-screen, etc., the whole school of conspicuous technique.

Word. When De Palma cues the lights (red), the Donaggio (blood curdling) and Spacek opens those eyes ghoulishly wide...you can cut the anticipatory dread with a knife. And the way Sissy contorts her hands as if a wrathful sorceress...still freaks me out.

Considering that the green haze is a De Palma staple that can be seen in a lot of his films (especially his earlier work), I'm glad that it wasn't removed.

In fact, De Palma used fluorescent lighting in outdoor scenes too in order to give the film a surreal and dream-like look.

I wonder if maybe The Thing will be as well to tie in with the sale price.

How long have you been waiting? Very tempted to order from DD with the coupon even though it's back ordered. But don't want to wait a month either.

Last week I wasted half an hour waiting for someone at BB to look in the back for RotLD cause the website said they had it, but they actually didn't. Don't know if I want to dick around with BB anymore, their selection of movies is horrible these days.

Back in college I played guitar in a band called Filthy Roadhouse Whiskey.

We had a song called "Dirty touchin".

It wasn't exactly a big hit, but it did get some airplay on local radio.

...true story.
