i believe the fan has different levels like low, normal, and high or something like that and im not 100% sure how many levels there are. well if it goes to high then you know that its overheating if the fan sounds crazy but sometimes it will sound really loud for a moment and then goes down to normal level depending on how much cool air is going into the ps3. its possible that your fan is running on normal level unless its loud enough to sound almost like its out of control or something like that

No it doesnt sound extremely loud and it comes and goes through out the game I am playing and not even close to how loud my 360 sounds but It has plenty of breathing room since my stand has no back or sides on it but does get dusty have to clean it almost everyday
