The song is nostalgia, but I genuinely think the opening works better for the film. I like the intro to the city, I like the slow build-up. Even in the commentary Mann talks about introducing the high-life Miami and then quickly showing them drive past ports and empty warehouses and whatnot.

I get that launching right into the club mid-song is a unique thing to do, but meh.

Well, that's how I saw it in the cinema and loved it, so I'm just happy that I've got it on Blu-ray.

Can't wait to revisit Heat and Miami Vice (film). In fact I see them as Heat: Los Angeles and Heat: Miami

I would have loved seeing Chris as part of the drug operation in Miami Vice, make it a quasi sequel. Oh well, still love both.

Best wishes to Val Kilmer. Apparently going through very difficult times right now.

So is this coming out in UHD, because **** a 4k remaster if it's not actually going to be output at that resolution. I probably wouldn't triple dip it anyway unless it was a really good price.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiight. Some of the most beautiful Blu-rays I've ever seen were mastered from 4K transfers. Hell, I happen to think that UHD as a playback medium isn't all that beneficial for films of this age, as even if you get a boost in resolution the unfettered grain can overpower the image whereas the HD Blu is a perfect balance between grain and detail.

So are you really trying to say that it wouldn't look better in 4k? I'm not saying the BD won't look good, but it's already been released on BD... and there is a medium that can actually display movies in 4k... so why would they bother remastering it in 4k just to rerelease it in 1080p. Makes little sense to me.

I'm not saying it won't get a UHD release EVER. What I am saying is that a 1080p version of the new 4K restoration will still be welcomed by most of the world's home cinema enthusiasts who've yet to make the leap to 4K, and there's no reason to deny that to all of those people. Yes, there's a Blu out already and it looks mighty fine to me, but releasing the new restoration on BD isn't gonna hurt anyone (indeed, we could do with sending a message to Warners that we want MORE of these new restorations e.g. Kubrick) and if it comes out alongside a UHD so folks like yourself can get your groove on, then we're all happy, no?

Why not release a UHD/Blu combo though? The mainstream will buy whatever is on the rack. Then, you have serious folks who watch this forum. Beyond that, there are those who have pretty legit front projection home theaters. May as well appease them all.

Y'all are misunderstanding me here, or perhaps I'm guilty of the same. A 4K/BD combo is pretty much a given at this point for any such 4K UHD release, what I'm saying is that I wouldn't begrudge this restoration getting a standalone 1080p release because it's not just about what one 4K owner wants.

Yeah, it's all new and exciting and **** 1080p, amiright Slaughter? But 1080p Blu has been around for 10 years and some would say has finally matured into the format we always knew it could be, partly thanks to all these amazing new transfers that have been minted in the last few years. Simultaneous 4K/BD releases of all these transfers would be awesome but even if Heat doesn't get a 4K release right away and were only to get a remastered Blu, I'd still buy it in a heartbeat.

I think some are just super excited about their new UHD hardware and are rabid about getting more discs to feed the machine's hunger.

I would guess this will come out with a combo pack. Fox is supporting the format well, and Fox release Heat now. As Geoff said though, sometimes UHD ain't the best for older 35mm movies, and sometimes HDR isn't the most accurate thing in the world, and I will be thrilled to get both in one shot and watch the normal BD for now.

Yep and isn't the general consensus that Independence Day and Ghostbusters I/II (all three 35mm sources from 4K remasters) are barely (if at all) any better than the BDs? I'm curious how the upcoming UHD BD of Goodfellas will look in comparison, but it seems 35mm movies are not going to look much better than they do on BD. It mostly comes down to quality source material and encoding.

The new one had a runtime of 172 minutes instead of 170 minutes. Amazon still says 170 minutes.

Time will tell.

I could kind of do without Kilmer on that SB cover, but otherwise it's pretty perfect to me. I love the subtle blending of the city into the artwork
