The Arrow is one of the few versions that properly times out the fluorescent light in the scenes in the stairwell, it's noticeably green in the Happinet and even in the new restoration the tube light itself looks pink (!) in some shots.

Given all that, it's a shame that the 4K disc wasn't released on its own as it's carrying a lot of baggage in this set.
Ta. Wont be bothering with this!

I'm frustrated that I placed my order right before all of the negative feedback on the release, and it was ultimately too late to cancel. I wonder if I can get my $50 back via Ebay.

Ebay always side with the buyer in any situation, so I am sure you could. Whether you think that's fair to the seller is your call. I knew since they were focusing on the Italian cut this was a wait and see at best. Shame to hear the results.

I thought he meant flip it on eBay to recoup the money he spent.

Ah, my bad. Well I doubt you'd get the whole $50 but you never know. I have good luck on ebay starting auctions at $1 and taking a lot of pictures, but it's never a sure bet.

Diabolik is selling it for $54.99 plus shipping. If I'm able to sell it (sealed) for $57 plus shipping I'll break even, so we'll see.

Geoff just had a closer look and yes the restoration version the lights are indeed slightly pink in that stairwell, but to be honest for me anyway it looks right for everything else, Black levels were never a strong point with DOTD.
The other version (theatrical) has problems but i would put it on par with the Arrow or slightly better IMO.

Yeah, I didn't say that the 4K resto looks all the way wrong, just pointing out that shot. But the other masters look really odd, and not just the colour as Danny was spot-on about the blown highlights due to the wrong levels. I mentioned that SDR isn't all that hot with retaining highlights anyway but these are beyond help IMO.

I still think for many at this point in time it is a case of you pay your money you pick your poison sort of thing. For me and for £25 to have all of these on Blu is a no brainer..........until we get something much better.

PS.
If you people are thinking about cancelling orders etc but maybe don't have any Blu versions of this, i would say imo still go for it, it's a canny set for the money.

First, the packaging for this set is pretty crappy. Aside from being ugly (who uses cases that thick anymore?), I can never get it to close properly on the first attempt. With all the hinges/trays and cards inside this thing it's just a ***** trying to get it to close right. I've already slightly creased the slipbox trying to get the inner case out at one point after I stuck it in without having closed it properly. Ugh,

Anyway, I thought the open matte version was the best-looking cut in this set but only after I played around with some settings on my TV. I had it set to "Dynamic" (I have a Samsung Plasma) for this cut, which generally made the film look crisp and colorful. Outdoor scenes looked very good but indoor stuff was also nice and detailed even though it looked a little too smooth at times. Watching this version was odd to say the least, given the framing. It felt like I was watching a screening of the film at an old theater - the type you find in strip malls where they never quite set the projector properly. The other cuts I quickly sampled did not look like what I was expecting. Maybe I need to play around with the settings some more but my first impressions were underwhelming. Overall, I think I regret buying this, but somehow still feel like it's better than whatever else is out there, including the old Anchor Bay release.

Finally, what does Winding Refn have to do with this release? If he financed it he should ask for a refund.

Yes, these jumbo Amaray cases are shite, we've had to put up with them on quite a few releases on this side of the water.

I feel the same way about this release: I regret buying it but it's still a decent enough edition if someone's got no Dawn on disc whatsoever. If I could buy just the 4K disc on its own for half the price I'd have done that.

I am going to put my head on the block here, it is imo the best release thus far. But i am using memory and grabs for comparison....far from ideal.

Argento cut yes. The other cuts, same encode as the Japanese box.

This looks very similar to the problems Don May was having with initial encodes of DEMONS 2. The grain was disappearing between frames. They had to do all sorts of tweaking to the AVC encoder settings to fix the problem and get a good encode. I guess the owners of this didn't bother, they just did a "set it and forget it" AVC encode.

2-Perf said they're the exact same encode.

I have the old Anchor Bay, which ain't great, but I doubt I will upgrade until there is a real remaster. Whenever that might be. If the Arrow were still in print I'd get it, but it's not.

Same here, even if a proper remaster does happen (fingers crossed), I will be keeping my Anchor Bay copy for this reason:
