Tomb Raider Release Date Set for March 16, 2018
By Silas Lesnick on July 7, 2016

The Tomb Raider release date has been set for March 16, 2018

Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM have today announced the Tomb Raider release date. Look for Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) to make her big screen debut as Lara Croft when Tomb Raider hits theaters March 16, 2018.

Norwegian filmmaker Roar Uthaug (The Wave) will direct the film, which has a script by Transformers: The Last Knight scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

The original Tomb Raider game was published in 1996 by the London-based video game company Eidos and became one of the most successful video games of the time. A reboot of the series, telling the origin of Lara Croft, was released in 2013 and sold over 5 million copies. The most recent game, titled Rise of the Tomb Raider, is available now for the Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC.

Paramount Pictures previously made two movies about the daredevil archaeologist on a series of global missions. The films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, starred Angelina Jolie and grossed a combined $432 million at the worldwide box office.

Although the Tomb Raider release date officially marks the first feature film to claim that weekend, the March 16, 2018 date has been held by Warner Bros. for some time. It was previously speculated that the DC Comics adaptation The Flash would claim that date. At the moment, however, The Flash is without an official release date.

Tomb Raider will be distributed by Warner Bros. with MGM. They will produce the film with GK Films.

Though I wasn't a fan of the Jolie Tomb Raiders, I'm hoping Alicia Viklander's role is more like the recent Crystal Dynamics Reboot of the game series on PS4, XB1, which was more of a survival story with a focus on tomb raiding along the way and less of the supernatural.

That's a tough call. Despite those games (which I never played) I think most people in general still see her as a female Indiana Jones type. That's certainly what I would like to see in another movie, the supernatural and fantasy elements are what made the originals interesting.

I want big action scenes and loads of awesome FX and 3D. That will make me happy. I enjoyed the previous two movies but I think there was so much more potential.

Both games in the new series are supernatural.

There's something I don't quite understand with these movies.

Lara is British. For the games, the producers make sure they get British actresses to voice her (Keeley Hawes, Camilla Luddington) yet for the movies they go with an American (Angelina Jolie) and a Swedish actress (Alicia Vikander) who has to be taught to do a British accent.

Wouldn't it be easier to just go with a British actress who's perfect for the role?

Absolutely!

I really liked the Tomb Raider movies especially the first one, shame though there never was a third one with Jolie. She was perfect in her role IMO.

Vikander will be just as good I think, I liked her in both Bourne and Seventh Son.

At the time of the original, Angelina was a bigger draw than any British actress.

Alicia now is all over the place, and people probably thought that they could draw bigger audiences with her. Also, she's fairly young, so if it's at all successful she'll be able to do the further franchise installments. She's an Oscar winner.

Because Hollywood is led by old idiots who think "Star Power" is still a thing that matters, Alicia Vikander has been in a movie that won awards so she is more bankable than any british actress who has at most a guest part in Doctor Who and a few good reviews from theater performances.

Quite telling that the only franchise to have the balls to forego star power entirely and dare hire unknown british actors for some main roles is Star Wars, which is probably one of the few franchises whose clout is bigger than any actor ever even for old Hollywood big wigs.

To be fair to Vikander though, she already has the British accent nailed, and she's lived in London for quite some time.

Which is probably just a happy coincidence, knowing how hollywood big wigs think.

‘Tomb Raider’ Reboot Casts Walton Goggins as Villain Opposite Alicia Vikander (EXCLUSIVE)
Justin Kroll - Film Reporter

Walton Goggins is in final negotiations to join Warner Bros, MGM and GK Films reboot of “Tomb Raider,” the latest adaptation of the popular video game starring Alicia Vikander as the iconic character Lara Croft.

WB recently announced the pic would be released on March 16, 2018 with Norwegian director Roar Uthaug helming.

Goggins would play the antagonist in the film.

MGM joined the project in 2013, acquiring rights to the popular video game to develop the feature in partnership with Graham King’s GK Films. King, who acquired “Tomb Raider” in 2011 from Square Enix, will serve as producer.

The original “Tomb Raider” video game was released in 1996 by London-based Eidos, which is now part of Square Enix. The games have sold over 35 million units. Square Enix released a reboot in 2013 with a younger Croft (age 21) being sent off on her first big adventure amid amped-up action and set pieces.

Paramount’s two films starring Angelina Jolie as the British archaeologist were released in 2001 and 2003 and grossed $432 million worldwide.

Warner Bros. will co-produce the pic with MGM and GK Films.

Goggins has already had a busy year on the TV front with his HBO series “Vice Principals” which just wrapped its first season and was renewed for a second. On the film side he was most recently seen in Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” and also has the Seal Team Six History Channel series “Six” bowing next year.

He is repped by ICM Partners and Darris Hatch Management.

Goggins is great although I'm surprised they haven't gone for a bigger name for the villain. It's really Vikander I'm worried about, she seems like a really poor casting choice.

Um in every sense, she doesn't look the part and from what I've seen is a very weak actress with no charisma (yes I'm aware she's won an Oscar). I just think she's really poorly suited to the role of Lara Croft. Plus she's so slight and I can't believe her kicking anyone's butt!

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the video game Lara Croft pretty much a size 0? Pretty sure Angelina Jolie isn't the most muscular woman either.

The old video games, yes. The new video games (which this film will be based on) contains a Lara Croft who is much more lifelike.

She certainly looks quite different from the old games, and yes is more realistic (whatever that quite means). But she's still not Ronda Rousey or something.
