Something went wrong with the HDR10 grade as the Dolby Vision version online does not suffer the same fate. |

It's also true that the HDR and color on the UHD disc is gorgeous. |

To me HDR. It does look a bit softer than the BD but it's not as bad as what people are saying. It's still pretty sharp. I like the UHD better.

Got a hold of this and just wanna make two things clear: 1) the improvements to the dynamic range and the colour are so beautiful, it makes the regular Blu looks almost washed out in comparison; 2) it has indeed been softened like a mofo, I know that's old news but it really has taken quite a hit compared to the Blu-ray.
Here's where it gets a little more interesting. I decided to play around with the sharpness controls on my UHD player, see what would happen, and I managed to get the UHD to a point where it brings back a sense of the Blu-ray's clinical crispness. The detail on the UHD can't be restored to the same level because it's simply not there to begin with, and yet because it's so soft it can endure being sharpened back up again without adding a load of artefacts. If anyone's got a Panasonic player then go into the settings during playback and turn both the mid and high frequency Luma sharpness to +6. You may then notice heavy ringing along the edges of the letterbox bars, but put Edge Correction to +1 and the ringing disappears. See what you think! And yes, I know: turning the sharpness UP is an anathema to any serious home theater enthusiast, but in this case the movie has been filtered quite significantly so I thought I'd give it a go. ![]() |

Also a bit off topic but while on the subject of sharpening, on the LG OLED am finding that sharpness at 0 looks a little too soft overall, while a setting of 10 seems just right. Not sure if that's just me though. |

The point is you shouldn't have to fix Universal poor work with this disc by applying artificial digital sharpness. I have no doubt you did a good job because you know home video transfers better than Universal does. But still they shouldn't get a pass for this.

I'm more surprised HDR could make such an impact on him with an SDR set. It sounds like since he has 450 nits (the same as me) he gets a little of that pop and range though, same as I do. I would never call it really effecting though. |

What can I say? I honestly do see a big difference in range and colour on many UHD titles. Bear in mind that my TV receives the wider colour gamut from UHD, and the SDR conversion itself of the Panasonic player actually apes the brightness curve of HDR to a certain extent (I've measured it in HCFR) without needing untold amounts of extra brightness, I'm running on 200 nits max with my current TV settings.
XDTV: oh, I know. But I thought I'd give it a go and it works nicely. |

And lately I've become a little more relaxed with tweaking my settings especially for regular Blu-ray because I've got it calibrated so tightly to begin with, I can always return to what it should look like, you know? Not that I tweak EVERYTHING because I simply don't have to, but if I feel like counteracting the teal menace on Aliens or making something like Star Trek Beyond not look so damnably milky then I will do so. Bwahahahhahahhaaaaaa!
