Logically you'd think so but that won't work. The PS3 is not going to be able to recognize the drive, even though it originally CAME from a PS3 to begin with!! Very weird, I know.

Hey everybody! Just got my 500GB drive in from Newegg.com. Had some trouble backing up my files from the PS3 to an external HDD though. I could not for the life of me get the format changed to FAT32. The I found this website: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/ind...at32format.htm
Follow ALL of the steps. (I missed the first couple about using disk manager to set up the drive, d'oh!) You have to download and install a tiny app to make this work, but it's super-fast. I re-formatted a 250 external HDD in about 1 second. In the process of backing up the PS3 now...wish me luck in swapping the drives! |

I just wanted to stop by and say thank you.
I saw this thread months ago and never thought I'd need it. Well...I needed it ![]() The installation is a success so far and I am now formatting the HDD and syncing with the server. Now that we have trophy support, anyone performing this upgrade should first select the trophy icon, hit triangle and sync with server. This will save all your trophies and you will lose NOTHING!!! Thank you again Bluray.com!!!! |

I've just read that you need to put the latest firmware on a memory stick before you can reformat a new drive, the PS3 then asks you to insert a memory stick with the firmware on it and you press select + start to allow it to load
Surely the firmware is separate to the hard drive? So is this a load of rubbish? |

It has been several days now and my ps3 is still running smooth.
I was a little skeptical, because it was a samsung hard drive (I'd rather use western Digital) but I got such an amazing deal on newegg that I had to give it a shot. I'm not looking back. Thanks again for this thread. |

I appologize, I know that there is a thread already made for this but there are a ton of pages that I don't feel like reading all. I'm a little illiterate when it comes to upgrading all I know is that I have to buy a notebook harddrive (internal). My question is if I'm looking for about 100gb H.D. which one should I buy and where? Thank you all!!

As long as it is a SATA 2.5" HDD it will work fine. Look on newegg, tigerdirect or bestbuy, and you can find some great deals. I picked up a 120 gb hdd dirt cheap at best buy, and I'm sure you can find better on newegg.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...nd&Order=PRICE That should give you a good starting point. There is debate over wether 5400 or 7200 RPM is better, but the PS3 originally uses 5400, so stick with the 5400. ![]() I saw a couple good deals on that list, hope you can find something that works for you! Once you get it, feel more then free to ask again for help installing it, it's VERY easy. Also, you might want to look into a USB thumb drive so you can backup your original drive first. You can get those dirt cheap too on newegg. |

Also check for black friday sales, I'm not sure if there are any, so best to look now and wait the week if needs be then to regret purchasing today and seeing a good sale. Check the hot deals official black friday thread for links to the major stores.

I've always used seagate since god knows how long, been happy with them. I agree it's more personal preference. My only maxtor drive I had to replace within a week, but the replacement drive has lasted me 3 years and still running.
