I can quote that entire exchange without looking it up. Sad, right?

"You've worn a stillsuit before? Your suit is fitted desert fashion. Who told you how to do that?"

"No one. It seemed the proper way."

"That it is."

Thinks: He shall know your ways as if born to them.

Has anyone tried this in a Playstation 3 or 4 recently? Maybe a update is affecting playback?

It played fine on my Sony player, but then again all of my displays support 50Hz except one. Does yours?

Also, if it does have a PAL logo then it's your display not supporting 50Hz. Most displays support 50hz, but there's a few out there don't.
I believe I remember reading a few months back (probably on the boards here) that some Sony blu-ray players will hiccup with region-free discs. I took note of it because my main blu-ray player is a Sony and figured I may need to find an inexpensive decent region free player if I ever got serious about buying releases outside the US.

Strange that I have never had that problem. I have three Sony players and a PS4.

Yes it does, actually on a projector Pioneer Elite PRO-FPJ1. Works great with PAL and 1080p 50Hz. Definitely the PS3 rejecting it, and its definitely one of the logos with the problem as it occurs right when the first logo appears and the German copy warnings.

That's weird. I'd email Sony about it.

Do you think they will care considering it specifically states Region B on the back label?

Don't tell them that much. Just say that you have a region free disc from DE.

It's not that big of deal, since I did watch it aok on my backup region free player on the same display, but I thought I might just mention my experience for others, in case they too run into issues. This could be due to a recent Playstation 3 update or something, since I keep my players all up-to-date ... I know ... bad idea.

P.S. on a side note the PQ on these disks are amazing. Much ... much better than the US blu-ray release IMHO.

I don't think there's any huge inherent difference, but obviously with optical there's the chance of generational loss along with the risk of drifting elements. Optical shots on whole can just look dirtier (although there are plenty of effects shot on very high stock) because of the process and stock used.

But there's always a chance that Dune could be restored and have it's optical shots digitally re-composited (like The Next Generation), I'd imagine it would look like a different movie then!

I was surprised as well how much of a difference AVC instead of VC-1 could make.

The PS3 is the issue here. It will not play any PAL content. In most cases, that just means you can't watch some extras on imported discs but the main feature will be fine. However, some imports have their actual menus encoded at 50hz, in which case you're screwed and can't get anything on the disc to load with a PS3.

That sucks. Did that happen with an update? Didn't it used to play PAL content?

Nope. Never has. That and the strict region-locking were the only things I hated about the PS3. Otherwise, it could hardly be beat.

Thought so. Thanks for the confirmation. PS4 is fine though?

Im not sure its ever going to look better than the current German one really.

Well technically, if the do a proper new 4K scan, then yes it is possible to look better than the current German one.

I've read the first novel and it's got to rank among the very best in all of sci-fi. Haven't started the 2nd book yet and I've never seen the Lynch film.
