I don't trust Maxtor or Western Digital. All of their drives fail on me.

I prefer Seagate.

Yeah, I've had a 160gb Western Digital in my ps3 for over a year now and not one problem. Also got a Western Digital 250gb external hard drive for about the same time and no problem. I only got them cause they were on sale and got a good deal on both. Just make sure it is a SATA 2.5"

Default My 2 Cents

The one I pulled out of my 60 gig was a seagate the 320gig I replaced it with was also a seagate. The important part is it has to be 2.5" HD that's 9.5mm thick, the 500 gig is 11 or 11.5 mm and will not fit. If your trying to back up the entire system you have to format your entire external drive in fat 32, you'll have get a third party software package to do that.

OK so my 320gb Hard drive arrived today and ive deleted any saves, trailers, mandatory installs etc that i dont use or can easily be replaced and ive managed to squeeze everything down to fit on a 16gb flashdrive. Im now in the middle of backing up data. but i have a couple questions.

1. There was no option to back up my PSN games Wipeout, R&C and most importantly Killzone 2 beta. am i right in thinking these can be downloaded again from the PSN download history after i upgrade and i wont be charged again?

2.Im currently playing COD5 and noticed that there was no data saved in the game saves the only place COD5 showed up was in the HDD installs so the game automatically saves there. so when i back up will this be saved i would hate to go right through the game again?

3. I suppose it would of been quicker to ask.... will everything on my PS3 be backed up?

Thankyou

yes, if it is on the PS3, it will be in the backup file. You don't need to worry about copying save files etc. if you already have the backup file.

More than likely you won't have any problems, but if you have some sort of flash memory lying around I would make additional copies of your game saves. Everything else can be downloaded again or copied from disc, but you really don't want to lose those.

Exactly the saves are what im worried about.

Upgrading seems very simple but im still nervous about it.

once the back up is complete i will just follow one of them many upgrading videos in swapping the HDD then put the flash drive back in and select restore back up and thats it....simple...yes? i hope.lol

My question is if I'm looking for about 100gb H.D. which one should I buy and where? Thank you all!!
I just bought a 500Gb Samsung Hdd from newegg.com last week and it was $109.99.

Seems to be going smoothly. I had a marathon session of Merc2 on Sunday and the drive SURELY would have crashed that day if it was going to at all.

It offers high capacity. Nice speed and low noise. The mod couldn't have been easier.

Thought my upgrade went smoothly. but today i tried to play cod online, when it says reading hdd... my ps3 keeps freezing so i tried with some other games and got the same result. the problem only occurs when trying to play online. so it looks like the new HDD is causing freezing. any ideas anyone?
Thanks

I've had 250GB for ~1 year now without issue. Maybe try copying lots of files off/on and off the system from a USB drive and see if you have the same issue. Some large files and a bunch of smaller MP3(?) files. If you still have problems maybe it isn't seated properly or you have a flakey HDD.

probably a dumb idea and not cost effective but has anyone tried putting a solid state drive in a ps3?
