[edit] P.S. Technically it's not used in theatres either, and for the same reasons: it's not a display standard. So for a theatrical DCDM (Digital Cinema Distribution Master) the P3 is mapped into 12-bit XYZ, an ultra-wide gamut that is essentially format-agnostic because it doesn't relate to any one display gamut. I take that to be correct, yes. It's why you'll see mentions of 2020 during discussions but that's referencing the container, not the content - although the Lego Batman movie was apparently mastered in proper Rec.2020 so it will be very interesting to see how that ends up on UHD disc.

i still stand by what i said about the movie being too dark at night. im not sure if its because of my OLED and not as many nits as others but i feel its too much. i know u got a ZD9 geoff which is like the king of nits for TVs! lol

I agree with what your saying. I thought the night scenes were just too dark. For some reason I remembered what someone said in the Arrival 4k thread, I think it was Bruceames, and I used the dreaded HDR Vivid mode on my LG B6P. Once I got over the shame in using this mode, and doing a bit more tweaking on the settings, the nighttime scenes were absolutely perfect.

I must have mentioned using dynamic mode on the Samsung player for the dark movies, since I don't have an OLED. After getting an Oppo, I have noticed the default settings on the Oppo result in an HDR picture which is just as bright (or very nearly so) as the dynamic mode on the Samsung (which I relegated to the bedroom TV).

Can't speak to player settings other than the Sony really, but I did not think night scenes were much darker than the BD really. Some darker lighting here and there, and the whole movie is a bit dimmer on UHD, but I don't think it was especially dark. I have everything pretty much on default movie mode settings too.
As with other Warner discs, I think nits really matters, and I think people who dislike the dimmer look will often prefer boosted settings. |

So you have a 12bit source and a 10bit display. With DV the 12bit to 10bit conversion is done at home, with HDR10 the conversion is done in the studio. Why should a conversion at home be better every time? |
