Default samsung dlp hl72a650 need some help

Hey guys a coworker of mine is looking to get a "bigger" tv for his basement. He found this tv the samsung hl72a650 for 2200 at a local store. I don't really know much when it comes to DLP or bigger screen size as to what to look for in terms of PQ and the best bang for the buck. He wants something around a 72" TV for around 2200-3000 dollar range or possibly alittle bit more if he is getting a much better product. I would probably say he isn't going to go under 65" because he want's something big. I am just wondering if there is a better deal somewhere else or a better brand in this size for the same amount of money. I was even trying to get him thinking about a projector instead of a DLP tv but like I said I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to huge screens as I only own a 50"er. Any help on this would be much appreciated!

His only other options in that size and price range are Mitsubishi DLP or a Front Projector.

What is he going to be using this room for and are there any issues with ambient light control?

He has a big basement and he is making a home theater room nothing special like some of the rooms people have in here but just a big screen tv and he has a nice sound system all polk sreies speakers running from a pioneer elite 94. He has no ambient light issues in the room he is using. I am just curious as to whether there is a projector in that price range or anything else that might be better for PQ than the TV he is looking at?

For that price he can easily get a very good 720P projector(1k), mount and screen. A 1080P projector(starting at about 2k) may set him back slightly more when mount and screen are factored in, but he can go much bigger than with a dlp.

But what will look better and I know this is going to be a matter of opinion, with a 1080p projector (he claims the guy he was talking to says that he will get grain from every projector which I don't really think that grain is an issue with them but it might be) vs the DLP he is looking at? Cause whenever I look at DLP I mean regardless I have a plasma and have and LCD I see a kind of faded look to the PQ but I mean they don't look bad at all but he will have to worry about dimming over time and whatnot from the lights. And I haven't really seen a 1080p projector in a dark room at all so I have zero knowledge on how that will look.

First off grain is inherent to film and should be visible on all display technologies.

What that guy was talking about was problably pixelation which can be seen, but there are some projectors that eliminate this effect.

For more information on projectors check out Projectorcentral.com and projectorreviews.com

As for what they look like, there is evidence at this very site:Brian Sturgeon & shockabuku

Yeah but both of those guys have amazing, very EXPENSIVE projector setups that are likely beyond the budgets of many of us here. While I'd probably give my left arm to have a setup like that, I doubt many of us will ever have the opportunity to do so.

A more realistic comparison would be to look at some shots on projectors that are more within the OP's price range.

They are both standard DLP sets, so the differences would come down to maufacturer preference. I have a mistubishi 65" DLP and have no complaints. He could also look at the Samsung HL67a750, which is an led dlp set, unfortunately it doesn't come in a larger size.

I've owned a Mitsubishi HDTV and I currently own a Samsung DLP LED HDTV. They are both terrific HDTV sets. In a vs game, go with the cheaper one.

Thanks for the input guys you got an older man jumping for joy that he finally came to a conclusion to get the samsung tv for that price. Much appreciated when he is finished with his home theater setup I will see if he will take pics or let me over to take pictures of his setup once its all done.
