Basic idea of the premise of the park is the same but this is much more about the inner-workings and politics of the park. The AI is much more advanced and a big part of the show. FWIW the show is set after the movie but there's no guarantee that the events of the movie happened in the show's timeline.

It's far and away darker and more bloody/violent with a lot of awkward nudity and a shoe horned in orgy (hey, it's HBO, so we must throw in gratuitous T&A!). Really watched it for Anthony Hopkins. He chews up the scenery.

Don't think of it as an adaptation of the movie. It's more like revisiting the movie's premise and taking it in another direction.

It's less a remake of the movie and more like an entirely new project working from the same premise. There are some references to the movie here and there (such as the movie's poster appearing in the background and the Gunslinger from the movie making a cameo) but it's mostly it's own thing. And it's a fantastic show, joining Game of Thrones, American Gods and Hannibal as one of the best new shows of the decade.

There is absolutely no need to watch the movie first - going in blind is totally fine for Westworld.
