Neither the PS1 or the PS2 were as gigantic as the PS3, they can slim down the PS3 to the PS2 size and then have a PSThree the size of the PSTwo with either 1.8" HDD or NAND Flash.

i agreed it could happen twice, just not next year. and changing the size of the drive wont work. its gotta stay 2.5 imo

Only reason I'm commenting is that I wanted to laugh at how the author takes the 'We don’t comment on rumour or speculation' line that Sony (and most every company) always uses as "there could be s0me meat to this rumour"

I also wanted to say that I hate all these damn skus. wtf!!! Multiple versions of the same console isn't really uncommon I guess, but it's happening far too often now. Thinking back over the past 18 months or so I think the following consoles have all been available for purchase in the US

1. Xbox 360 Core
2. Xbox 360 Arcade
3. Xbox 360 Pro 20GB
4. Xbox 360 Premium 60GB
5. Halo 3 Xbox 360
6. Xbox 360 Elite

7. PS3 80GB (Motorstorm)
8. PS3 40GB
9. Metal Gear Solid PS3
10. PS3 80GB
11. PS3 160GB

12. Wii

18 months, 3 consoles, 12 skus in just the US alone. If you throw in other territories and the couple US PS3 Skus that disappeared over 18 months ago you can easily see it's gone well beyond ridiculous. Oh. I almost forgot that there are certain 360 Skus that have both HDMI and non-HDMI models so the number might be a bit higher (I don't know when that happened though).
you're missing the launch PS3s, the 20 gig and 60 gig.

Ah'spose.

You could transfer the stuff over other ways though.

And is the unit cost of a 2.5 smaller, or just the cost/gig?

Easter 2009?

First I'm hearing of it.

It is technically possible, but it could lead to hardware issues if they do it too quickly which is why they didn't go for April 2009.

Yeah exactly. It's been out 2 years and it still has not been able to even match the LAUNCH price of the PS1 and PS2. IT'S TOO FRICKIN' EXPENSIVE TO COMPETE!!! With the Wii at 249.99 and the 360 with a 199.99 sku, the PS3 will continue to fall further and further behind.

Look, I understand the logistics behind why the price is what it is. I understand that at 399.99 the PS3 is a great value. All I'm saying is that perception is reality and right now the general buying public percieves the PS3as being overpriced. Sony got themselves into this situation of not being able to be competitive. They are the ones who decided to design their system in such a way that priced it out of competition. There's no point in trying to justify it. It is what it is.

And what should they do? Just call it quits now and restart the generation?

Not to make myself the devil's advocate, but even if that was the case, Max couldn't say anything that could lead you guys to think that the price would indeed be lowered (including a new system or not) around Spring.

If he was to be quoted further with such a claim (and he certainly would), this could actually damage the PS3 sales leading to that period of time.

So if there is indeed a price cut coming (wether it's with a Slim PS3 or not - I somehow doubt a Sony PR Rep would talk about that so casually), I think nothing would be confirmed a least 2 months prior.

When 1.8" HDDs are available to buy for consumers I think there is a chance that SCE would consider their use as they are considerably smaller than 2.5" drives and not too expensive.

Nothing they can do really. They've made their bed and now they must lie. I just hope they've learned their lesson for the next go around.

What kind of stupidness am I reading here?

Do you really believe that a few months extra at $399 rather than $299 is going to bury a product that will be on the market for about 7 more years?

I mean seriously, think about it. It's just one holiday season, big deal!
