Default Help with setup receiver/ps3

Just got in my Marantz s5002, and it's great and all. However, my sub isn't playing when I'm using a cd from my ps3 to it. It works fine for movies, my sub is there, just not on my cd. Any thoughts as to why it isn't outputting anything? Connections are ps3 to player via hdmi. Preouts on receiver to HCA-1000 and Def Tech SuperCube I, with the sub just using a sub cable.

i would think its because the cd isnt 2.1. if you want your sub to produce bass, then try using one of the sound modes.

I've tried using all the different sound modes, but still nothing. Who knows though, I'll fiddle with it some more but if anyone else has some info it would be much appreciated.

On my old 7002 (long story, Int), I had to use Multi-Channel Music to activate the subwoofer when playing CDs. No other sound mode would kick it in. I mean, if it uses the subwoofer during movies, obviously the connections are done properly - it would have to be a receiver setting. Have you upgraded the PS3s bitmapping settings? I doubt they have anything to do with this, but you never know.

according to my manual, the listening modes i have will expand the 2ch source to 5.1/7.1. i would think you can re-configure the speaker settings for only 2.1 if you want. ive never had to try any of this since i get plenty of bass from my two fronts. are you not getting enough bass from your fronts?

there are two options.

1. Connect an Optical cable (with an HDMI)...when you want to listen to music, you have to go into PS3 settings and switch it to optical audio output.

2. Only use an HDMI cable, but when you want to listen to music you have to go into the PS3 settings and un-select 5.1 PCM & 7.1 PCM.

...both of these methods can be a pain in the but. Option 1 seems to be the easiest of the two.

After messing with it some more, I'm not getting my sub to play when I'm watching movies either. It will play in certain modes, such as any of the surround modes, but if I put it in a surround mode I have no dialogue because I only run a 2.1 setup. If I set it so I have dialogue (virtual mode), I have no sub. Is this something I need to switch in the receiver or ps3?

Ya, I went through and did the calbiration and everything, and my sub lights up, it just doesn't output anything. My display on the receiver in setup says SUBW=yes I have an option for bass that says mix or both though.

I guess a question I have then is, are all receivers like this for 2 channel, where because I don't have a center I'm either going to have no dialogue or if I go into 2 channel mode on the receiver setting I will have no subwoofer, or this just specific to Marantz? It would seem to me like its specific to the Marantz, because when I was using my RX-V563 I wasn't having this issue, but on that one I also wasn't using a separate amp (since no preouts), but I don't think that would have anything to do with it. The 2ch mode on it would still allow my sub to play.

I get plenty of bass from my fronts as well, but I bought a nice subwoofer for a reason, not to just have it sit in the corner and take up space
