I've got City Lights, Modern Times, Great Dictator and Gold Rush on my list. Don't really want to spring for all of them though, I'd rather mix it up a bit. Suggestions?

Modern Times is the best one, IMO. While I get the appeal of The Great Dictator, I found it all a little too much and will be selling my copy.

That's pretty much the reason I don't take part in their sales. It'd be nice if they could at least do a week.
Then it wouldn't be a "flash" sale. It doesn't need to be a week, and that's also no reason not to "take part" in saving money.

Then they can call it a SALE

If I don't find out about the sale soon enough or if I'm asleep when the sale starts. Then I wake up and have to work and by the time I get home the sale is nearly over.

At that point if I had time to get an order in will the title(s) I want be in stock. Potentially wouldn't matter if they didn't restock for the week long sale but it seems like a good possibility cause I'm sure they don't restock the 24 hour sale.

I honestly have not paid much attention to how stock holds up during the flash sale more recently. A couple years ago I was going to participate but I remember then many things were sold out.

I only went for Le Samourai and Barry Lyndon.

I might pick up a few more later on, but I have enough Criterion discs to keep me occupied for now.

I already have Barry Lyndon, and really shouldn't be jumping on it right away, but it really is too damn tempting (and I say that as someone who found out about the OAR thing two days ago).

Anyone want to cast a tiebreaker vote on the Chaplin movies?

They can call it a sale now because it is one.

Everybody else on the forum has work, other responsibilities, just like you. If you pay attention to the discussion here around the time the two flash sales hit every year, you can join everybody in participating.

The last five dates have been:

October 17, 2017
February 28, 2017
October 17, 2016
February 23, 2016
October 7, 2015

See the pattern? October and February.

So, start watching this discussion, and the Criterion Reddit board around that time for hints on when, precisely, they will happen. The sales usually coincide with a popular new release. Barry Lyndon was released on October 17th, the same day as this most recent sale.

City Lights. Must have. One of my all-time favorite movies. Chaplin's acting in the final scene is worth the cost of the movie alone.

Does the 10% membership discount work during these sales? Decent chance I can spend enough to turn a profit if so...

Yes, the 10% discount works, but in store only. If you’re lucky enough to live in a state with no sales tax, or are within close driving distance, you can get some nice money off.

Too bad you missed the golden days of coupons. Oh, God, I spent so much last year, haha. Dropped almost $500 on the last B&N sale with those. Three Colors Trilogy, Cassavetes box set, and like 20 individual titles. It was great!

That would be my suggestion as well. The good news is, you can't go wrong.

Well nobody's suggested Dictator yet, so I'm not sure that's quite true.

Not quite as well-executed as Pringles' "they shipped us potatoes instead of rubber" though.
