You nailed it perfectly, it's cool to hate now a days, in fact I sometimes feel like you are not part of the so call "group" unless you hate what everyone else love.

There's some truth in that. It's like this vicious circle where when someone originally comes on the scene, he's underrated, a genius, etc. Then when he gets mainstream acceptance, then the haters pile on to shout how overrated they are.

I think a few years ago he probably was overrated, but now he's...I don't know what the term would be, correctly rated? He has a unique ear for dialogue. I think Reservoir Dogs was his best movie, and Jackie Brown the one that doesn't get enough props.

I think you can really see his talent when you see people attempt to ape his writing style. After Pulp Fiction came out, there were plenty of movies that tried to piggy back off of its style and ended up a disjointed mess. And this might not be a popular opinion here, but I think Lucky Number Slevin tried to pull off his dialogue style and failed miserably, especially the Lucy Liu/Josh Hartnett scenes. Sometimes when you see people do something poorly, it makes you appreciate more the people who do it so well.

His dialogue is hard to emulate. He learned a lot from the 70's flicks and also how to say things with peoples actions and how to do that on screen. I didn't love Death Proof but I thought the dialogue was genius.

I don't hate him, but I think people elavate him higher then he should. Like he can do no wrong. Death was incredibly wrong. Bad Acting, dialogue, and an uninteresting story. The whole second half of the movie, I felt he just took ever Dukes of Hazzard chase scene and pasted them together.

Reservoir Dogs - 5/5
Pulp Fiction - 5/5
Four Rooms - 4/5 (His segment only, not the rest)
Jackie Brown - 4/5 (Gets better with age)
Kill Bill Vol 1 - 4/5
Kill Bill Vol 2 - 4/5 (most will disagree but it finished it off perfectly)
Death Proof - 3/5 (Good but clearly he was having more fun than putting effort in)

Thats my take anyway. The guy makes damn good movies, just not enough of them.

edit - because otherwise it just sounds like you're saying that a certain artist has too many fans which, well, doesn't actually make sense.
no, by overrated i mean, that just becuase he makes a movies, its automatically an awesome movie. For example... what is so good about Kill Bill?? i think its overdramatic, the violence is just dumb... but becuase Tarantino did it, its awesome... if someone else made the movie, i bet a lot of people wouldnt like it...

+1

I love a good action flick and I enjoy a good fight or gun battle, but QT, in my opinion, has an unhealthy preoccupation with detailed violence. Every flick has to have gruesome violence. I believe that if he didnt have access to the medium of film as a release, or a way to "act out", he would probably get into trouble with his "tendencies".

Good Tarantino is not overrated - Pulp Fiction, Four Rooms, FDTD...I know he didn't direct all of those last two.

Bad Tarantino is unwatchable - Death Proof. Just a horrid excuse for dialogue in this movie. It reeks of Tarantino trying to be Tarantino.

He's a fun creative guy who loves so many genres of film, that he can take what he loves and make something purely his own. He's got the backing, the support and the money to make things his way, not the way a typical studio dictates. He's always trying new things and personally I'll see anything he comes out with because you can be sure that although he has his own personal stamps on his films, each project has some fresh elements. He's a filmmaker who loves film. Cheesy, violent films... Japanese Mangas... old Martial Arts films, gut films... chick flicks... he wants to have fun doing what he loves which is to set the industry on it's ear every once in awhile to prove that you don't have to follow studio exec's demands to make a sucessfull film. Frantic, frenetic, haphazard but there's stucture in there and I'm all for it.

I don't think so, nobody bats 1000% but he's pretty good almost every time out the gate. Spielberg is as close as you get to perfection for me though.

Read the man's post again - he said he'd watch anything he puts out, not that he'd like it. It's not uncommon for people to seek out the work of a director they like, even if the movie doesn't sound like something they'd normally watch. I do the same with Scorcese.

Listen, I get the picture. You're not a fan of the guy's work. But please don't bash him for giving his opinion in a thread YOU STARTED soliciting them.

yea he said hed watch it, but from the way hes writing it seems like he will like anything Tarantino puts out for the simple fact that he likes him as a director.... everything Piccaso made was not a masterpiece... thats what his followers should learn...

And actually... no, i never said i dont like him. i said RD and PF were actually really good films... but to justify Deathproof and Kill Bills as being classic material by him seems a bit far fetched... which is why i would like to know WHY these films are so highly coveted....
