Default Playstation 3 Troubles

Sorry if this is in the wrong board... but my Playstation 3 keeps giving me this error whenever I try and play most Blu Ray discs or DVDs.

It says error disc wont work and then gives me this number 80029940

Its weird because I will take the dvds and try them in my other player and it works fine..so I know its not the discs.. any help would be appreciated.

How old is your PS3?

Also, try checking their support site for that error number.

If you're ps3 broke, which it might have, then you'll need to get it replaced. My original launch 60 GB ps3 broke months ago and I got mine replaced. I think that the warranty lasts one year or something. My warranty expired some time ago for my first console, but I didn't get a extended warranty. The cost to get your ps3 replaced is $140.00 or something like that. Give Sony a call and they'll mail you a replacement console that is the same model as what you already have once they get yours. A word of warning, make sure that you back up everything that you have stored on your hard drive and reformat your hard drive because you will not get your original console back. Once you get your replacement console back, you'll need to restore your data on the drive. Make sure that whatever backup media you use, it's FAT32 because that is the only format that the ps3 will read. It's seems strange that Sony will not fix your broken console. You would think that it would be cheaper to fix then replace, but apparently it's more expensive to replace a single part then it is to replace one console, even though one part is cheaper to make.

Not sure if it is related but I found this...

Now, unconfirmed reports indicating discontent are spreading across the Internet, and this time it's the PlayStation 3 that is alleged to be having some issues. According to posts on various Web site forums, including those at GameSpot and the official US PlayStation forums, several gamers are seeing "error code 80010514" instead of the loading screen of their favourite games.

Game Revolver contacted Sony Support and was told, "The code is not common, and a simple reset of the system and restoral of factory settings should do the trick." However, the writer, Steriotyp, said that this failed to fix the error, which he or she was told is caused by one of two things: The first is a faulty sector on the internal hard drive, and the second is a faulty installation of software or firmware.

The article offers advice on how to avoid the issue, including ensuring that the Internet connection is stable, dusting the machine regularly, and following instructions on installing software and firmware to the letter.

Other users appear to have received error 80010514 after mistakenly installing firmware meant for another region--for example, putting a North American update on a European console.

GameSpot UK contacted Sony Europe to ask about the issue, and a spokesperson said, "I've spoken to our customer-services department, and they aren't aware of this issue with the PS3."

I can't really argue with the article, however you don't put an north american update on a european console or vice versa, it's just not a good idea.

I have found some more with the exact error number you have, (80029940), and a lot of them claim to either be a broken disc (hairline fracture/scratch) or fixed with a firmware upgrade. Have you updated the firmware to the latest available?
Check other discs as well just to be safe.
I'll keep looking online, and post anything if I see something important.

Are these rented discs via Netflix?
That is the only other thing I have found that might be the culprit. The shipping of Blu-ray discs can damage them and some have not played with that error message.

I suggest just calling sony and seeing if they know what it is and how to fix it, and if you are still covered.

I have heard about bricked consoles or the fact that we have to wait nearly 20 minutes for a firmware update to download and install. I'm thinking what is going on here. I know months back, a firmware update killed a number of consoles, not mine luckly, Sony fixed the update and then had it available again.

Thank you very much for your help man. I appreciate it. I thought I had the latest firmware but I am going to go and double check right now. I will also keep trying other discs.

Do you remeber that one game that was a mmorpg and one of the patch files released for it would destroy windows xp.. by deleting required files...

Recently, when i put my USB stick in my PS3. It does take time to load the files on the USB key like pictures or videos. Is this normal ? Could there be a problem with my PS3 or USB Key ?

I had this problem once and reset the PS3 and restored settings and it fixed my problems, I didn't back up my files though and I lost them.
