Now that Apple is behind AV1 codec, what happens if streaming goes 8K/10,000nit mastered Dolby Vision? What if UHD Blu-ray got stuck with a lesser form of Dolby Vision? Does the BDA spec need to be updated for 10,000 nit mastered content, I wouldn't know. AV1 will blur the lines between streaming and disc a bit further though, as it's 25% more efficient than HEVC. |

I know about that 10.000 nits prototype but not that the X1 U itself is a prototype. Nor that it's designed only for 8K TVs. Did I miss something? If what you're saying is true about the Z9D only being replaced by a future 8K TV, then I guess I'm good to go till then. I certainly wouldn't mind, saves me from doing another 4K upgrade before 8K. ![]() And as far as I am concerned, streaming will never be a substitute for physical media. ![]() |

Denon builds the AVR-X8500H in Black and a limited allocation in the beautiful Champaign finish. Champaign dealer authorization is very limited. Here's a photo I took at CES today of the X8500H in Champaign. ![]() |

The reason why Sony are creating a new processor - aside from tech rarely standing still - is for 8K as much as anything, the reference to 10K nits is to allow the processing to display such levels without compromise, unlike the tone mapping in current Sony sets. But you don't get "the full HDR brightness specification of 10000 nits" from a processor alone, this prototype must also be able to physically resolve such brightness levels. Besides, while I'll happily chop and change Blu-ray players for a few hundred smackers every year I've never been the sort to do that with TVs which is why I go for the absolute best that I can afford to cover my ass. There's one guy at the AVF who literally upgrades his Sony TV every year, sometimes more than once in a year, and every time he changes it he gushes about how the new one is so superior and that he's sticking with it for sure but EVERY year without fail he upgrades. But we're getting an upgrade of sorts with the Dolby Vision functionality so that's something I'm very much looking forward to putting through its paces, and I'm still exceedingly happy with this TV. As and when the 8K 10,000-nitter is released then I'll be keeping a very close eye on it but something tells me it won't be released in the sort of screen size or price point that I can accommodate anyway. |

The next few years are going to be a hell of a time for HDR in general. All the growing pains it's suffered will be worth it in the end.

Whats nice though, is 2017 and 2018 are pretty golden, HDR10 and DV are matured nicely, PQ and calibration ability is very nice among Sony and LG. Good times.
It was a rough couple of years when plasma died and all you had was highly expensive OLED and displays that did UHD and not HDR, still waiting on HDMI to work out. Now its fixing to get all jumbled again with HDMI 2.1, but I am not upgrading all my gear any time soon. HDR10 and DV are just fine for me. |

When you start talking about $500 players, $2000 AVR's, on top of a new display, 2.1 can kiss my... right now.
I am so happy with HDR and UHD right now, you can't make me care. |
