I think your HDMI cable may be backwards. Because BluE-ray is the BEST!

No to sound insulting, but perhaps you should have the Best Buy Geek Squad come over and check the set-up.

There's something wrong.

Have you tried running a basic calibration with an Avia disc or the like?

What is your over-scan setting?

What about edge-sharpening, noise reduction or detail enhancement settings in both the sources and displays?

Here is my equipment:

Epson 1080UB projector (100" screen)
Sony STR-DA5300ES
Panasonic DMP-BD35
7 Definitive Technology speakers
HDMI 1.3a cable switched by my receiver

When running the player, I check the signal information on my projector and it is showing 1080P signal. The focus is fine, but the picture just does not compare to my 1080i cable signal....how can this be??

I am comparing my BR picture to my Oppo dvd player, which apparently does an excellent job with upscaling. To be honest, I see very little difference between my Oppo DVD and my Panasonic Blu-ray.

Any thoughts here? Should blu-ray be as good or better than my FIOS signal??

Thanks all!

-Mark

All i know is... something IS wrong

don't ask me what though, but i've never been a fan of projectors... no matter the brand or model.

What's wrong with projectors??? Whenever I jump up and cheer during a ball game, the picture goes black for a second! That's what's wrong. I don't have that problem with my 27" tube TV.

Oh wait, nevermind. I figured it out.

I have run the calibration on the Avia II disc. Not using any noise reduction or sharpness enhancements.

Not sure about my overscan setting....will have to look into that....I suppose it is on the default setting.

Maybe my eyes just prefer video to film?? I was expecting that going to BR would be like jumping from Digital SD cable to HD Cable....I just don't see a dramatic difference from my Oppo DVD to my BluRay.

From a sound perspective, there is definitely a difference.

Just forget it. Buy a x-box and buy direct downloads from micro$oft. Those surely would match upconverting discs on a oppo.

If you can't see the difference from upconversion to BD, then... seriously, just take it back. It's of no use to you apparently. Far be it from us to try and talk you into something when you're already convinced the opposite is true.

For me and mine, there is a huge jump in quality that makes upconversion completely eclipsed by BD.

hmmm
at that screen size you should notice that a Blu-ray picture smashes all HD broadcasts and certainly upconverted. Not sure what's happening. And you tested Wall-e too.

Wall-E looked pretty damn good, although IMO all animated movies look good, Bluray or not. Don't get me wrong....my Blueray DOES look better than my DVD, however I wouldn't say it "smashes" it.

As for Bluray vs. HD broadcast, I absolutely find the broadcast sharper....I know this makes no sense, but it just is. My Bluray definitely has much better color and sound. Someone early in this thread said that broadcasts often filter/enhance their picture to smooth out the grain in film....I am starting to believe this.

obviously you don't see a difference between 108i and 1080p which is fine, but there's a huge difference for me. watching football games off cable HD looks great, but a blu-ray movie destroys it. on another note, i like your taste in speakers.

I don't know if you're doing something wrong, but when watching a dvd upscalled on my PS3 versus a blu-ray disc...there's no comparisson, blu-ray delivers a much better picture.

Don't flame -me-, but as you are apparently comparing films from your Oppo to your BD35, are you sure you tried to actually play -Blu Ray- movies on your BD35, and not simply upscaling DVD movies you already have?

Blu Ray players do upscale, but they are not necessarily the best at doing this (specially vs an Oppo player), and comparing a true HD signal from a FIOS source to an upscaled DVD would really be comparing apples to oranges.

Now if you truly are playing Blu Ray discs, you should definitely see an improvement, as Fios is very good, but the bitrates are superior on the vast majority of Blu Ray discs.
