How the hell is Thief a gamble if you love Michael Mann?

It's a masterpiece and one of his best movies.

I feel the same way about my most wanted title on blu-ray The Grey Fox. A fantastic early 80s film starring Richard Farnsworth in a memorable performance as a gentlemanly old outlaw released from prison after decades behind bars and having to come to terms with how much the world has changed since his days robbing stagecoaches. In addition to a great story and acting it has spectaculaly beautiful cinematography focused around the Pacific Northwest and steam trains. It would be a gift to film lovers everywhere to get this restored and released on blu-ray after not even getting a DVD. It has become a lost film stuck on VHS.

There was actually a laserdisc release of The Grey Fox, but yeah, no DVD or Blu, and it's not streaming anywhere. The film, as far as I can tell, was produced by Zoetrope Studios, so maybe Criterion could work a deal with them if the films elements are good enough. By the way, I found this making-of retro-documentary, which would make a nice bonus feature:

The Grey Fox: Artist and Their Stories

I agree that it's a lovely, beautiful movie that deserves to be re-discovered.

Agreed. It will soon be the 50th anniversary. Don't know how true it is but I've heard rumors that Paul doesn't want it released since he didn't like the Wall of Sound production style of Phil Spector. Michael Lindsay-Hogg, the director has hinted he wanted it released. Back in 2011, Lindsay-Hogg said:

Quote:
"We have been been working on it pretty much every year for the last couple of years. And the plan is, at the moment, to have it come out, I think, in 2013," Lindsay-Hogg said.

There was a UK blu in the works, but it was apparently mastered in the wrong aspect ratio (1.33:1) and when people complained about that it was delayed indefinitely and never happened.

I've noticed that The Bad Sleep Well DVD is now only available at Criterion on backorder and temporarily out of stock on Amazon which Stray Dog has been for a while. Future release of it maybe? 2018 be superb if both of these Kurosawa films would make it to Blu.

Still, for 2018, I hope Criterion gets a shot at Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining.
Looks like a UHD 4K release is official now. From WB for sure:

Really when was the last Kurosawa release Dreams? Surely after Red Beard went through a new restoration a few years back they are working on it. Personally I think Stray Dog or Drunken Angel would benefit more from a HD transfer. Both are rather lacking in detail and contrast. Granted that may be a result of the surviving elements, but HD should help in those areas even without a major restoration.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure Apple has the rights to the film. Good luck Criterion.

Aside from the HD upgrades remaining (Red Beard, Stray Dog, Drunken Angel, The Bad Sleep Well, Dodes'ka-den, and The Lower Depths - with TLD being complicated by being paired with the Renoir version), we also know that Dersu Uzala will be getting a mainline release. Madadayo will likely join the mainline at some point, too. I can even see Criterion eventually securing the rights to The Quiet Duel and Rhapsody in August. This would leave all but the Eclipse releases and the OOP StudioCanal owned Ran from being on Criterion Blu-ray.

Please don't bring up Ran. Such a beautiful film and I can only image how great a Criterion 4k mastered release would be. Surely that Studiocanal/Lionsgate contract will expire someday.

**edit** nevermind

Uhh no they don't.
