Backup by hooking ANOTHER HDD via USB. This HDD must have a FAT32 partition for backup to work. Once that is done, you switch the internal HDDs and do a restore.

hi faud, so can i just go out and buy another hdd for backup purposes then? i have a 80gb. does that mean that my back up hdd that i buy has to be at least that size as well?

Oh I successfully formatted it last night, thanks!

It took a total of 6 hours to format my 500GB hard drive to FAT32, lol.

Also when I went to Backup my PS3 I had to restart my PS3 3 times before I'd no longer get error messages when trying to Backup, lol.

The reason why I went with it is because I trust Seagate and they have a 5 year manufactorer warranty.

I just put a Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB into my PS3 just a week ago. No problems at all with it. I've never had problems with Western Digital drives in the past. I agree with Marine Mike too about Seagate drives. I've had great experiences with them as well in my desktop.

Well I am currently in the process of Restoring my new hard drive!

Replaced it in under 5 minutes, which included digging out my screwdriver and canned air from the closet, lol.

Its a shame that replacing my BD laser wasn't this easy.

Default Need some help Trophy problem???

So I swapped out my stock 60gb for a wd 320 used a external drive to backup the data.
When I created the backup it prompted me to go to trophies and sync with the server which I did.
After I restored the backup my trophies aren't there. I tried to sync it again still not there. If I go to my friends list and click on myself my trophies are there and if I compare them to a friend they are there but in the game section it says there are no trophies.
What gives? Do I need to put the og drive back in and redo the back up and reformat the 320 and do the whole procedure again?

Nah, man. I had the same problem when I put my 500gb in. Just shut the system off. Turn it back on. Log back in to PSN, then do the trophy Sync.
Pretty sure those were the steps I followed to get mine back.
Hope this helps.

I also had the same problem. Mine eventually magically came back....I think for me what worked was actually starting up and playing each game that I had trophies for.....that seemed to make them come back game by game. I don't know....but rest assured that your trophies are there and will probably similarly re-appear.

Anybody know how to reformat the OEM drive after you replace it? I want to use the OEM 80GB drive for my computer but when I put it in an external enclosure and connect it to my computer it recognizes something is there but it doesn't show up as a hard drive.....and there's no way to format it.

Download swissknife and use it to format the drive. I run NTFS and couldn't see my bro's drive(it's what I used to back mine up) since it was a FAT 32. Used swissknife to format it before backing up my ps3.

Yup that did it. I had to put each game in one by one and then sync with the servers.
Thanks!

Yeah I have swissknife and used it for my external drive.....but I can't seem to figure out how to get it to work when Windows won't even recognize that OEM PS3 drive at all. It doesn't even show up in device manager...all it knows is that there is some sort of USB component connected.

Sweet - glad it worked! I have no idea why you have to do it that way but as long as it works LOL.
