You know what the worst thing about this 4K is? That the sequels aren't there right along with it. Yes, I know some people despise them and I certainly don't think they're perfect but damn, as soon as Matrix finished (and I'd stopped flicking my fingers in the air in celebration like Sir Steve Coppell) I wanted to watch Reloaded in similar 4K glory. I'm still itching to watch it several hours later but I don't wanna spin the Blu, I just gots to wait!

Disappointing that they couldn't be bothered to remaster the extras but hey, after how good the 4K disc is, I'm willing to give them a pass :P

Something that strikes me though is how "photochemical" the UHD looks in terms of its colour, the flat green murk of the previous HD transfer feels like an entirely digital thing, this blanket colour laid onto the image, whereas the more cyan look to the green on the UHD seems to have more of an organic response. Hard to explain. As for the new Blu-ray, I dunno what the heck that's trying to look like. Replicating the effects of glaucoma, maybe?
Oh, err, I sort of see it now, looks like condensation . Pardon the blonde moment by this brown haired dude.

So the movie was initially blu-ish, could've fooled me! But all the marketing at the time was very green. Just about every teaser trailer, TV spot, promo and even parodies had that green colour pallet (Mandela effect? )

I will admit though I have a soft spot for the look of the 2008 BD.

I just tested out the 4K disc (again i have a oppo 4K hooked to my plasma becuase I wanted an OPPO 4K before they were gone)

It was cool seeing the opening logos, less green tinted esp the title going from green to white.

The atmos was redic good. Only watched a few scenes at the start of the film will save the rest for the weekend.

Even at 31.00 you get what you pay for. They could keep it that price for a year this disc is a drug.

I watched Last Jedi Saturday nite and this Atmos Kills that Disney Atmos on Last Jedi.

Because Disney doesn't do Atmos, they do Atmouse. Made by the Mouse, for listening at levels perfect for a mouse.

The documentary still looks really good for what it is though, it wasn't finished on some nasty old composite source so detail looks clean and the prevalence of film gives it a nice texture. Efficient VC-1 encoding as well, they haven't just slapped the old MPEG-2 DVD encodes on there. It's not been upgraded to HD but we've got the next best thing IMO.

It was a pleasure revisiting Revisited too, reminds me of the good old days of DVD extras. I always wince when Carrie-Anne Moss turns her ankle when rehearsing the wall stunt though!

Man oh man, I really wish they would've just released the trilogy box set instead of the individual title. It's taking every fiber in my body to not purchase this beauty.

Unfortunately, WB knows that suckers like me will buy the first film, then double dip for the trilogy box later on.

I hope Bill Pope supervised them as well. After all the praise that I read about this UHD.

With all the animation WB is putting out on UHD, still no announcement for Animatrix? And I'm still ticked that Batman Ninja didn't get a UHD (the movie was such trash the 4K might've helped me enjoy it a little bit more). Maybe there's something against anime on 4K?

I just hope the sequels look as great as this one.

Do we know what the situation is regarding the DIs for Reloaded and Revolutions, or whether a fresh o-neg scan is likely/possible for them? IMDB only lists a DI for one scene in Reloaded but I know that place isn't always reliable.

It's my understanding however that these DV masters are at 4000 nits pretty much by default. They're usually graded on the 4000-nit Pulsar, with the Dolby Maui at 2000 and Sony's BVM-X300 at 1000 nits, they're also DV-certified mastering monitors for which they can employ temporary tone mapping to visualise the extended highlight information, ditto for >4000-nit material on the Pulsar.
I gotta ask bruv,

Other than I'm sure you perhaps working in the field currently, in the past, or simply know where to go on the latest in visual tech, but does a lot of what you understand of the specifics of the HDR process derive from the American Cinematographer magazine. I heard you mention this to another member a few months back and based on that I made the leap to subscribe to their mag as well. I haven't had much time to dive in of the few I've received thus far, but I swear on Dolby Vision I`ll start this instant if I can find out more from that magazine as you say. (I have the BR2049 and Last Jedi issue, as well as the last two months)

I've done pretty extensive research on the subject going back to last year, but I swear I'm always impressed at how much more you seem to know about it. (and that goes for a few other members, credit to you all as well and if you have any resources on it that'd be great) I know we've tooted your horn before but I thought I'd throw my two cents of appreciation as well if I haven't already.

I'm not entirely sure--the episodes seem a bit soft and artifact-heavy on Blu-Ray, and I kinda wondered if it was all finished digitally and capped at a certain resolution. I fear it might not even be enough of a full HD source to make the 4K look good. It was made to be aired on the web first, and quality back then wasn't as high as it is now.

It's kinda sad how a lot of animes in the 2000s were finished in SD, and I wonder if the Animatrix falls into that same trap. Granted, they don't look terrible or unwatchable when upscaled, I do find anime on film and HD-finished ones to be more spectacular. As far as 4K goes, I'd be psyched to see Akira on UHD--the sheer level of detail and color might make my head implode.

Unfortunately, maybe this whole upscaling issue with BDs is making companies allergic to animes getting 4K releases. They didn't see much improvement or incentive with Blu-Ray, they might not bother with 4K. It's also sad to see that some other animated tie-ins (like the ones for Van Helsing, Riddick, or Highlander) seem to be forgotten and neglected by studios, and we'll probably never see good HD rereleases of these either.

We finally got rid of that overwhelming green tint... awesome!

Now let's see if we can get a 300 4K Remaster with that horrid grain removed!

The grain in 300 is wonderful and a lot better than the slick clean look of the sequel. Tho it may need to be adjusted and be redone for a UHD release. Im not sure how a bunch of fake grain in a 2k di will look when its upscaled to 4k.
