Default Onkyo or Pioneer

Opinion...I'm not sure if I should wait for this Reciever or go with an Onkyo 806

I like Pioneer personally. I'm personally a "fanboy" of Sony and Pioneer, so my "opinion" is biased. The "sound" differences will be nill.

So I'd next look at the features and styling. If 1080p upconversion is important, etc.

Can't go wrong with either..

It's just...that I always had a niche for an Onkyo, and now that I can get one, it's like Christmas as a five year old all over again...ok, bad example, but you get the idea. Then I went to bestbuy the other day and saw the 1018, and it really appealled to me, but the Onkyo at about a hundred dollars more than the total price for the 1018, was still the best bet. But now that the 1019 is coming out, It seem to be a better buy. I just can't wait till April, and into May until I can get one. I NEED an reciever now or in the next two weeks. So any input is taken with lots of appreciation. And 1080p upconvert won't really be a need...maybe for cable, but I could care less...TV will always look bad to me.

And If I HAD to wait, I can do it.

Well at this time of the year, every year, CES is held, and all the manufacturers get to display/reveal new products for 2009. So if you can wait, I would do it.

Most would say to purchase what you need, when you need it, because if you play the waiting game, you will never purchase anything, because bigger/better/cheaper is always around the corner. However waiting for new products to come to life after CES is always the best time to purchase if you must "wait".

from "Productwiki.com"

The Pioneer VSX-1019AH shares the same amp/internal circuitry as the lower end 819 & 919. The 1018 includes the same circuitry as the higher end VSX-01TXH & VSX-03TXH Elite series receivers.

That was a user that wrote that comment in the pros and cons section. I hope its not true because I wanted to wait for the 1019 and its better ipod interface

Jeez I can't find this receiver anywhere other than Best Buy and I refuse to pay full price at $599. It looks like I'll be getting a Sony instead.

I hear ya. I've been in the market for sometime now. Was going to get an Onkyo, but the Blue Dots thing really had me concerned. So I pulled the trigger on the Pioneer VSX-1018 yesterday. 130 watts, 3/1 HDMI in, Multi-Zone with 1080p upscaling all for about $429 at B&H. (currently on backorder 7-14 days). The price was worth the wait. Plus I got an extended warranty of 3 years for like $36. You can't go wrong.

kevinokev, congratulations, I hope you like it. The only thing about that 1018 is that i'm pretty sure it doesn't do internal DTS-HDMA decoding inside of it. A downfall for me as I'm not always going to use my PS3 as a blu-ray player. However, I've been reading on plenty of forums and it seems that some of the new Onkyo's rolling out from the factory in late January and Early Feb. are free of the Blue Dot thing. It's a just a speculated rumor, but apparently also, there is a hardware mod that Onkyo repair centers can do to solve the issue. Onkyo has acknowledged the problem now, and taking faulted Onkyo's and preforming this hardware mod on them to rid them of the Blue Dots. Not completely sure, but some of the people on some UK forums have already sent theirs end for repair for about a two week turn around time. Who knows about here in the US.

Pretty sure the 1018AH-K does.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...H-K.Kuro?tab=B

Can anyone personally confirm that it internally decodes all HD Audio ?

I got one on Boxing Day for $399 CDN... love it...
The box does says DTS-HDMA, so I do believe it does... I can't be 100% without looking at the manual at home, as I have a PS3 and it always says PCM and not HDMA or TrueHD...

You are getting a great receiver, I was gonna get this one, but it was too big for my space so I got the #2 choice, sony 920. Just an FYI, this receiver actaully outputs 110 watts. but to me that wasn't a big deal, still really great receiver.

Pioneer 1018 does all decoding(DTS HD master audio included). I helped a buddy install his 1018 & sony 350(DTS HD MA bitstreamer only)player. Then watched a DTS HD MA movie.

Does anyone know what the on-screen display for the 1018 looks like?
