I have well over 150 UHD titles and it is REALLY rare that I get titles that have issues with my tone mapping, so I have a feeling this one could just be some overzealous authoring or a byproduct of the different grade for the HDR10 base layer. Hard to say. But I did find some of the color moments looking gimmicky because of it, plus some other issues. All nitpicks that some may not see, but enough that I am going to explore further.
It's one of those HDR grades that seems to utilise a similar amount of range as prior SDR versions but it stretches it out across the HDR range of code values, if that makes sense, so in certain moments display mapping could certainly seem to nuke the highlights that are there, along with actual blown-out highlights that are baked into the grade. As to which is which, I leave that to you.

Wal-Mart has this available for shipping for $25.99. Add $9.01 of other stuff to get free shipping. Who can't find $10 of something to get from Walmart?

Wal-Mart needs to have this in store for that price!

I'm still trying to figure out the distribution strategy for this release. My local BB, Target and Walmart did not have the movie on the shelf or even listed in their in store inventories. Fry's did have it listed as in stock but when I got there at 11:30 AM their copies were gone. I ended up ordering it from Amazon but it won't get here until Friday. It's now listed as Back ordered. You would think that there would have been more of a retail store push by Warner. Oh well, I'll just have top keep myself amused with The Patriot, The Jurassic Park Collection, Gladiator and Die Hard (already watched Braveheart). If not those, I have the Blu-ray set of the Friday Night Lights series and started watching that. The first two episodes reminded me of how great this show was. I may never see the sun again

It seems to me there is no strategy. That's the problem.

In a few months, when this has plenty of stock everywhere with crisp slipcovers and only costs $15, we’ll all look back and laugh together.

We went through the same thing when WB released Blade Runner on 4K. For weeks and weeks, it was hard to find and expensive if you did. Eventually, though, it became readily available and at a more attractive price.

Warner calls it the early adopter tax. The product is good so it must be working for them.

I couldn't find it yesterday anywhere either, and I'm normally not one to drop over 30 bucks for a movie, great release or no.

I'm actually considering rewatching my Blu-Ray set of the films one more time, just to blow my "matrix wad" and then wait for a 4K set of all the films later on when it's time to revisit them again.

In my own defence it doesn't look as overtly posterised on my set as it does in the photos seen thus far. It's still odd, but given that they're on a dilapidated hovercraft from 2069 that's been jury-rigged with loads of tech it didn't stand out to me at all upon first viewing:

Ah, bummer. I thought it was just my setup. I was really convinced my Samsung player was sending a bad signal for a bright white (like dropping the R value in RGB to get to that cyan/aqua color). In the BD copy it appears as just a solid white.

The electric gun effect has a similar but not as obvious look to it because it's a quick cut. But, you can see little cyan/aqua speckles on Cypher's teeth if you step through when he's firing.

Again, this is mostly all minor. But good to know it's not just my setup. Thanks!

PS - Oh, one more thing. That same 'blob' as I'm calling it appears white a few seconds later as Cypher is walking away from Morpheus.

Ack, I ordered this from Walmart for $31.99 on Monday night after Best Buy raised the price to $34.99. I still haven’t received a shipping notice.

No, it really doesn't...

And no, you don't just push a button. You can, but you're not going to get the best results at which point why are you bothering to take up the extra space on the disc?
Once you have settings that are correct (which, whether you do one encode, or one hundred encodes, you're going to need to work on regardless), it's literally just changing your target bitrate and hitting a button. So yes, you do just push a button.

Quote:
And with the extra audio tracks, how much extra space is there anyway? What improvements are you going to get? Are you then going to have US customers demanding a better encode as well? Now you're paying for BD-100s for that region as well, plus paying the encoder more money, plus a machine spends a day encoding that movie again instead of something that doesn't have any encode at all.
Because, of course, the studios only have ONE machine to encode content on. I mean, they're so poor, and don't make any profit on these whatsoever, so clearly they need to pinch every penny they can.

Quote:
To include extra language tracks.
That's literally not the reason they come up with more space for optical disc formats. I mean, it's one of the low ones, I'm sure, but it was hardly the driving factor. PQ and AQ (and lossless audio has largely solved that) are usually the reasons highest on the list to develop mediums that hold more data.

I'm honestly kind of surprised anyone on a forum for high quality movies would advocate against actually getting the best picture possible.

It does, according to people who actually encode Blu-rays professionally. But I'm sure you know better.

Average bitrate isn't everything.

Okay, so they have 200 machines. They can encode either 200 different films, or 100 films twice.

The problem doesn't go away.

I'm fairly sure "because we can" is the primary reason for most storage space increases.

I'm not advocating anything, I'm explaining why different encodes for different regions makes absolutely no business sense.

not the best 4k disc, some scenes are really clear and sharp but others to grainy. It don’t felt like a huge upgrade. Thats mine amateur opinion.
