Interesting how your post has almost 10 likes and almost all negative replies in the thread. To be fair, I agree with you. Many movies aren’t rated by themselves anymore. A movie that might’ve gotten top scores if it was first in its franchise will automatically get compared to other films in the series, sometimes similar films in the genre, and often gets lower rankings by critics and fans alike if it’s been seen before, no matter how good it is on its own. It’s a wonder that SW Ep VII did as well as it did, but at least it had the benefit of being the first SW film in 10 years.

IMO, this film was a slight retread of Lost World, but better. I found the dire straights of the island enjoyable and fascinating, it made me think of Kona (yes I know it’s not anywhere near as bad) and the progression into selling the animals to the highest bidder felt natural and very believable. Overall the natural progression into the sequel is fascinating. If done right and they wait a few years, an actual Jurassic WORLD movie sounds awesome and makes sense. Claire and Owen were less cheesy this time around (Owen not so much, but Pratt honestly isn’t likely going to win an Oscar anytime soon). So yeah I had fun and thought this was the first film since the original that had the most heart. Disclaimer: this was the first movie I saw in 4D, so that added a layer of fun to it too!

oh I don't know, that death felt like a Terry Gilliam movie where 'no one is safe, anyone will die' aspect - on a technical 'audio' note on that scene, hearing that in 7.1 in the theater really was insane as the sound designers matrixed the screams directly behind you - While the Jurassic Park movies will never be R-rated, there were three deaths in 'Fallen Kingdom' I wished they pushed the gore because

really deserved ultra-nasty deaths.

I thought Michael Giacchino's score for 'Fallen Kingdom' was actually one of the highlights.

I agree with you a lot.
I'm a "score wh**re" and I really like Giacchino's work..and his track title puns.

Zara's death didn't bother me. A) I'm a big horror fan and I was just excited to see a gnarly death scene. I never thought or cared if a character "deserved" it. In any mass-casualty scenario, good or bad doesn't mean a thing. It's just luck.

I probably would have enjoyed this movie more if it had an R rating. I would've loved to have seen some of those kills taken to the max.

I'm gobsmacked at the hate for this. I had loads of fun watching this and it edges out the first JW film in how much i liked it.

Oh and those complaining about Zara's death scene, every Jurassic Park movie has at least one cruel death scene

Despite the PG-13 rating there's STILL a lot of little kids in the audience, and the filmmakers are very aware of that. There's a lot of toys on the shelves right now. You need to be realistic.

Yeah, I get it. It's one of the main issues of the movie, trying to be/do too much: a gothic horror movie that still works for grade school kids..

I can be annoyed by a creative choice and still understand why they did it. Thanks for being condescending, though.

I agree - Tomb Raider isnt going to win any oscars or anything and was decent at best. I just was shocked at that 8/10 for this film. Your comments about the decent direction but awful screenplay are repeated quite often. Thats why I was so perplexed by the review here.

This immediately springs to mind.

Claire: "Let's be honest, no one's impressed by a dinosaur anymore."

Colin wrote that, and it says everything about him and his misconceptions about the franchise. Anyone who interviews with the producers (maybe one of them was Spielberg) and uses THIS as an answer as to why you want the job, should not have been allowed to be entrusted with the keys to the dino kingdom. JW and to an extent FK fails not because people are tired of seeing regular dinosaurs, but he has no idea HOW to properly utilize the ones he's got to work with.

I thought Tomb Raider was average, but I thought it was worth more than a 2 star affair. Alicia Vikander did wonders with the material given to her.

When J.A. Bayona was announced as the director, my first thought was, "we're finally getting a great JP sequel". Well, here we are - I thought there was nothing distinctive about the directing in FK. In fact, I think JW is a more "well-made" film, comparatively. The fact that Trevorrow will finish the trilogy himself is no cause for concern anymore. I welcome it. It'll be his baby, having co-written all three and directed two.

I thought the final act was directed well, and brought about a freaky claustrophobic vibe that hasn't been seen since the original's kitchen scene.

To me, if you were going to make someone's death that extreme, you do your best to have audiences relate to that character. Colin did no such thing with any of them aside from maybe Owen, Claire and Masrani. Zara is just Claire's assistant, who we happen to know is engaged, and is forced to look after her boss's nephews. That's not how you play on an audience's sympathies. There's nothing of nuance or expansion to her that makes you care, so when she does die, it looks more gratuitous than anything else, she's cannon fodder. Deaths like that have to mean something, if you are going to that extreme. Muldoon and the Raptors come to mind, or being wishboned by the two Rex parents. Even with them, the deaths are simpler Instead of just being picked off by the Pterosaur and torn apart, she's grabbed, dropped in the Mesosaur tank then swallowed up by it as the Pteranodon grabs her again. It's so ridiculous, in shot in such a way that you lose the human perspective making it look more like a cool effects shot, and nothing more.

Loved the score for Fallen Kingdom, much better than the lackluster one for Jurassic World.

yes, because it makes complete sense for a kid to think hiding underneath the bed sheets to escape and hide from a stalking dinosaur made her undetected ...

I also found the “ethical quandary” of the film really stupid.

We’re talking about gigantic predators who are easily the top of the food chain. Um, yes...let them die out. We can’t coexist with raptors or Rex.
