Damn. I was trying to think of a fitting noir to watch this morning. Didn't remember the opening until this post.

The 1946 version was already the third time the novel had been adapted into a movie. The previous ones were Le Dernier Tournant in 1939 (France) and Ossessione in 1943 (Italy).

Another title to add to the neo-noir category. It was a Kickstarter production so there probably aren't too many copies floating around, then again it's a pressed disc so they may be selling it at their online store at some point.

Picked up Moonrise during the B&N sale. I've enjoyed almost every noir blind buy I've purchased, especially the Criterion titles. But this one just didn't do it for me. Actually I just thought it was outright bad. Really surprised to see this on Eddie Muller's top 25, or even that he would categorize this as a film noir. Can't like 'em all I guess.

Whoa! I didn't know this. Thanks for the heads-up! Tracking these down looks like it could be tricky (and possibly not worth it), but it's still cool to know.

I'm right there with you. It's in my top 5 films noir for sure. The only explanation I can think of as to why it doesn't rate higher for some people is that it shares a lot of similarities with more beloved flicks like Out of the Past, Criss Cross and The Killing.

Although it predates all three of them... and personally I prefer it to both Criss Cross and The Killing.

The Killers is better than Criss Cross. Not sure about The Killing though.

The remake is a waste of time, however, beyond the trivia point of Reagan's appearance.

The remake most justly made me angry... when it wasn't boring me half to death. Although I guess it's somewhat influential? I read somewhere those hitmen inspired Tarantino's hitmen in Pulp Fiction.

Nothing wrong with the remake of The Killers. They turned a fatalistic (essential) noir into a pulpy action thriller with a cool-as-ice Lee Marvin that fits well with the other things he was doing at the time (Point Blank, Prime Cut.)

I like living in a world where we have both.

"Erosion" is right!

I kid, I kid. Anyone who enjoys the 60s Killers is welcome to their love of it. Honestly, I think the biggest sticking point for me is that it really has absolutely nothing to do with either the 40s film or the original Hemingway short story. I just wish they'd titled it something different.

Although the 1964 remake of 'The Killers' was disappointing for me, it did at least have one of cinema's greatest last lines!

Poodle Springs (HBO, 2000) remains the best of Bob Rafelson's four excursions into neo-noir (the others being his
remake of The Postman Always Rings Twice, Black Widow, and Blood & Wine). He shot a continuous
narrative with no commercial breaks just like a feature film, with the full compliment of period detail and expensive
production values. The script by English playwright Tom Stoppard has real gravitas and actually improves on Chandler
and Parker's novel in important ways. The character of Philip Marlowe and his mission are given time to develop, while
the plot hustles. The film was produced by Sydney Pollack and photographed by Stuart Dryburgh. James Caan, an actor
I get tired of rather quickly, has less of his usual mannerisms here and delivers a Philip Marlowe who is both empathetic
and hardboiled. His Marlowe is memorable.

Poodle Springs is not a minor film. Nor is it easily dismissed as a mere TV movie. It's obvious from the start that
everyone set out to make the best Raymond Chandler / private-eye film they could. It should have had a theatrical
release. It's one of best Marlowe films and an authentic noir.

So, where is the bluray?

I had fallen seriously behind in my noir purchases so I took advantage of the various recent sales to correct that. I picked up the following:

How I forgot about the release of Gun Crazy is baffling considering it's only my favorite noir film.

Une si jolie petite plage (Such a Pretty Little Beach/Riptide) isn't listed on the front page, am I mistaken in my belief that this is a noir?
