In the original Halloween (which is the only source canon for the new movie) Myers is not a sociopath. It’s stated as fact. He’s from hell.

Brief shots of Michael’s sister during the big opening tracking shot and some of PJ Soles during the famous “See anything you like” scene. Pretty brief, and not really worth getting worked up about, though of course the MPAA is sex-phobic.
