Is it possible Yuma was artificially sharpened for Blu-ray?

It doesn't look like it to my eyes for this or Yuma:

Oblivion: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1...0&a=1&go=0&l=1

3:10 to Yuma: http://www.caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1...0&a=1&go=0&l=1

I’ve seen those...

But the logic doesn’t add up. Why would Lionsgate intentionally soften these releases? And 4K UHDs of all things. I bet those Blu-rays were sharpened and now we’re seeing a much more faithful presentation.

If so, 3:10 to Yuma is one of the softest 35mm presentations I have ever seen. Oblivion was shot digitally so it should look much better.

Personally I think Oblivion on UHD looks stellar. I never saw any blurriness or softness.

I do remember 3:10 to Yuma in the theaters had a soft/fuzzy old school look to it. I liked the aesthetic. I never saw it on regular Blu-ray but I didn't think the UHD looked sub-par or inferior from the theater version. It looked how I expected it.

Lionsgate used film-outs on some of their catalog releases, 3:10 to Yuma being one of them. It softened the image, lost the grain and added a red push. It looks terrible. The BD is not artificially sharpened, it just looks better because it's a straight port of the DI.

Oblivion is more complicated, it seems like they just screwed something up when they did the HDR pass.

Nope. As RAH explained here, the film-out element used for Yuma's 4K transfer (rather than the DPX files as per the DI) introduced more grain than was desired so it was DNR'ed, and with the approval of the director no less.

A few words about...™ 3:10 to Yuma (2007) -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

We'll see what happens when wolverine hits UHD, if it's been DNR'ed to balls then you can crow about it (see what I did there?)

Maybe the mess up comes from the 2K DI to 4K upconversion.
It's a pitty Universal is not doing a corrected version of Oblivion, I think properly upconverted, color corrected and with a proper HDR pass it could be demo material, one of those upconverted UHD BD's like Alien Covenant or Prometheus that look outstanding.

the Dolby Vision streaming version actually is superior over the disc HDR encoded version, Universal should correct it to that.

The HDR is awesome, the sharpness is among the worst UHD discs I own, and I own a lot. Just a horrible botch job on the upscale. The 1080p disc is razor sharp, as intended, the UHD a complete mess.

RockyIII lost glasses while viewing his 30” screen from 10ft. He’s simply not seeing or thinking clearly.

Not everything is supposed to be looking super sharp. Even in the real world, when you look around, not everything looks super sharp, there is a softness to the image which is natural in Oblivion, more true to life

LOL here we go...

There is nothing natural about accidental blur. It is an accidental, technical problem with the upscale process.

And yes, when I look around, everything is super sharp.

*** I think we’ve just identified your problem ***

Need to get that checked out!
