I don't like how all of the trees are pure green in the day time outdoor shots of the 35th (and apparently also the 4K). It just doesn't feel very "Halloween" time to me when there's no yellow, orange, brown leaves on the trees & I feel it really adds to the atmosphere. Even then, the night scenes on the THX were better also. The 35th was stripped of some of the blue. Like I said, a nice mix between them would have been amazing.

Top = 35th, Middle = 2007, Bottom = fan "restoration" to "match" the THX DVD. I want the bottom, but with the detail of the top. The fall colors look outstanding, but the clouds are completely washed out.

That bottom image is the way I have always enjoyed this timeless Carpenter classic (via Anchor Bay's THX DVD, which I bought when released -- unfortunately not the two-disc numbered limited edition variant), and save for aliasing and noise issues, I have always preferred the 1999 DVD for the way it looked.

Here's one comparing also with the spoRv version. For me 2007 is too warm & yellowish throughout, the 35th is too cold & green throughout, and the spoRv version is warmer in the day (with no glowing grass!) and cool at night. It would be perfection to my eyes if not for some blown brights. Any idea which version the one with the yellow leaves is?

Top = 2007
Second = Unknown fan restoration
Third = spoRv restoration
Bottom = 35th

And also a kinda fun comparison of the 35th and spoRv:

It’s a fan restoration meant to match the color timing of the 1999 Anchor Bay DVD.

I am aware. But the spoRv version in the image is from the most well known restoration that was made to match the 1999 DVD. I'm trying to find out the specific name of the one with the yellow leaves so I can track it down for viewing. Although going by the following post, I'm not so sure it even exists & might have just been an edited "mock-up" screenshot. https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/HA.../page/3#663076

And here's another comparison. 35th on top and the spoRv restoration on the bottom. spoRv has nice warm day colors, but not glowing like the 2007, and also stronger blues at night like the 1999 DVD. But it doesn't have the yellow leaves like the one screenshot. Which leads me even more to believe it was just that, an edited screenshot, as well as being unable to find any actual fan restorations other than spoRv's.

You mean lossless (the 35th in the boxed sets lists the mono as TrueHD)?

But to your point: Was the purported TrueHD on that disc found to be a lossy format?

That's as unintelligent as calling the 35th the Grinchie or Grouchie edition.

Even though I have the big set, I haven't watched this movie on blu yet. But looking at those pictures I would say that the 2007 disc makes the movie look more like spring than fall. That's a problem for me.

Looking forward to this, I've owned the Criterion laserdisc, the 1999 Anchor Bay THX limited 2-disc DVD, 2007 AB Blu-ray and now currently have the 35th anniversary Blu. Would only like lossless mono but the new 4K transfer is more than enough. I just hope my new LG B8 OLED arrives shortly after!

You do know the difference between lossy and lossless, correct?

And the difference between audio formats?

Mono audio in DTS-HD MA is lossless audio.

Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS compress the sound hence the lossy designation since audio fidelity can be lost during the compression. These have fixed bit rates and for Blu-ray can range from 192kbs to 6.0mbs.

Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS X, DTS-HD MA do not compress the sound. Instead the full fidelity track is encapsulted in a folder. These have variable bit rates and can max out at 6.0mbs while dipping lower during playback.

PCM does away with the folder and presents the audio in uncompressed format.

Then there are the channels:

Mono is one or two channel, easily verfied by listening to the track. Audio coming from the center channel on a surround sound setup denotes 1.0 Mono while audio coming from front left and front right denotes 2.0 mono. Some systems can process 1.0 mono as 2.0 but you can easily tell by the lack of stereo seperation that they are mono.

Stereo is two channel and you'll hear seperation between the left and right front speakers.

Stereo Surround is four channels and you'll hear dialogue from the center speaker, audio seperation betwween the front left and front right, and singular audio from the rear speakers.

5.1 expands on Stereo Surround by allowing stereo seperation between the rear left and rear right speakers. It also adds a low frequency effects channel which is usually sent to the subwoofer.

The audio format holds the channels. So you can have Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono lossy at 192kbs fixed or DTS-HD MA 2.0 Surround. You can also have PCM Stereo sound. Scream isn't hiding "lossy audio in DTS-HD," they are presenting the original mono in DTS-HD MA.

In this case... the stand alone discs for Halloween have Dolby Digital Mono while the discs exclusive to the box set have Dolby TrueHD Mono.

If you haven’t yet, you need to grab the “fundamental collection” version, which is an improved version of the spoRv. It’s what I used for the basis of my extended version. TBH, after seeing the 4K grading, I’ve cancelled my order. I finally have Halloween exactly as I personally want it (35th detail, 1999 grading, TV scenes intact, original PCM mono), and I’m not going to be as happy with another version at this point.

I always thought the spoRv version needed a bit of a touch up (there were a few glitches I found) where is the restoration available? I’d love to get it.

EDIT: nvm, just found it on myspleen.

FYI, my version is the “Revised Extended Version” if you’re interested in it. Available at the same place.

It take long for this thread to crash and burn with complaining. Good thing there is almost a dozen versions people can choose from.

Bill Hunt posted some shots of it. Even with a pixelated phone camera, it looks fantastic. Very filmlike.
