I'm glad that Sony is finally releasing it, but I'm most likely sticking with my Umbrella release, pending any new surprises.

This reminds me I have the Vudu digital copy I purchase months ago just never got around to watching it. I'm assuming it's better than the Blu-rays?

Why would you assume that? It's probably the Umbrella transfer more compressed or the Twilight Time transfer more compressed.

I assume he meant color-wise only as far as "better" goes. Last time I checked, the Vudu version is the same trasnfer that was used for the Umbrella release. So, it's dated compared to the TT releases, but not blue.

Speaking of the Umbrella release, it can be had right now for $12.69 Shipped with the code AUTUMN15 at DD, no need to import it directly from Australia.

I'm going by the screen shots that I've seen of the TT release, I remember the film being more colorful and the daytime shots we're not darkened when I saw it in the theater. Never seen the umbrella release but people seem to be pointing to that as the right one.

You can compare them here:

https://www.caps-a-holic.com/c.php?g...=74912&i=3&l=0

The Umbrella transfer is dated in comparison, but doesn't have the revisionist grading, so it's a compromise most are willing to live with. As mentioned above you can get it for under $13 shipped from Deep Discount right now.

I’m predicting this Sony release will be the one to get, with the corrected TT transfer (or a brand new scan) and corrected audio. I’m sure they heard from TT about the problems with that release.

They've known since 09/29/2012. Rereading the TT thread around that time is rather amusing.

I don't own a whole lot of Sony Blu-rays so I'm not really familiar with their release history. Do they typically commission new scans to replace older HD masters? I ask because it feels unlikely that they'll rescan NOTLD '90 for this reissue. I mean, we still don't have a fresh scan of Guns of Navarone, for instance. I think it'll just be the Twilight Time scan minus the blue tint. I'll wait for reviews before purchasing. If it's even a minor improvement over the Umbrella release I'll grab a copy even though it'll likely be barebones..

The TT release is from a 4K scan, there is zero reason to do another scan. They should have a version of that scan that's untampered with.

Someone who does video stuff made a custom BD using the TT scan and setting the levels just right. It's not blue like the TT, and not quite as bright as the Vudu/dvd (which the Umbrella looks like to me). All that detail is in the TT scan, just buried under the blue tint. Hopefully Sony does it right. If some dude with a good computer and some software can do it at home, no reason a studio couldn't do it also!

There. This should put an end to the speculation

It's hard for me to double-dip on Blu these days, especially when the scans are 4K. Why not just issue a 4K + Blu, which may possibly come eventually? Sony issued "Christine" as a Blu, and then 3 years later, a 4K + Blu combo.

I'll sit this one out. I still have the botched TT, and also the Umbrella limited edition that also came with the 1968 original. The Umbrella has room to improve, yes, but these incremental upgrades are getting annoying, especially when Sony has the capabilities to do a true 4K release right now.

Wasn't it Sony who provided TT the transfer in first place but sure they can make it look better if they wish so.

I have the Umbrella BD so like someone else said I'm fine for now.

I don't understand why the TT disc is so controversial. Looking at caps-a-holic, the tint looks wrong on the first cap, but that's it. In every other cap, the transfer looks natural, way more natural than the Umbrella in color and it resembles film instead of video. It's not like the frame is a wash of blue, it's subtle enough. Cap 4 shows vivid, natural, cool-green grass that looks like the intended look over the warm, artificial, bright hue of the Umbrella that looks like it hasn't been color corrected. The blue that's there in the TT transfer is clearly meant to give it a cool look and simulate nighttime, like in a lot of movies. Those last two caps that are set in daytime blow away the Umbrella IMO, I don't know how anyone can disagree with that. The grass and everything looks just right. I'd be fine with Sony releasing this same transfer.

Maybe because it’s revisionist.
