Even though I think Lucas is the worst director ever, you gotta go with the opening scene in Star Wars. Truly a classic for the ages.

Star Wars. Hands down.

As far as I know, Lucas started the "no opening credits" that some movies are now following (BB, TDK, Benjamin Button).

And how can you deny the opening sequence? We're thrust into the middle of a rebellion, there's a damsel in distress, people getting shot, and the legendary Darth Vader makes his appearance.

Other than that, I'd have to go with every Lord of the Rings film. Each edition begins with something fantastic (The battle of Mt. Doom, Gandalf vs. Balrog, Smeagol coming upon the ring and making his descent into the creature Gollum).

Other great opening sequences.. Gangs of New York (fantastic and unique "battle" sequence), Kill Bill... I'll think of more later.

I really like the opening of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

As someone else already mentioned, the opening in Saving Private Ryan is a good one as well.

Heh, I like the whole movie but yeah, the opening scene and the scene where everything is explained are really good (imo). I love the music they use for it.

Quantom of solace and casino royale both had really good begginings. But how can you even compete with the first star wars? The star destroyer flying over head chasing the rebels, now that was freaking amazing.

Ok, yeah, after reading more of the comments, Saving Private Ryan takes the cake.

Ok just remembered my all-time favorite:

City of God

*knives sharpening, chickens getting cut, then "stop that chicken!" and the chicken chase through Rio with the camera 2" off the ground, followed by a stare down with Lil Ze and a 360 degree camera pan on Rocket with a 10 year backtrack...amazing!!

Definitely The Dark Knight but I thought the crash in the beginning of Disturbia was pretty good. It really pulls you into the movie.

One of my favorites is definitely the opening sequence in Gangs of New York... the action, the music and the butcher...

Another one I like is the one from Snatch... where the items move from one character to another and ends up with the diamond...

How about worst opening sequence?

A History of Violence

Talk about slow and dull.
