Mistery expenses? That money was for paying Mr. Spacey's rent boys!

I have always been slightly disappointed with the picture quality of Superman so when I saw the extended cut I was very pleased with the picture quality. I was hoping for a 4k release, so I held out. Glad I did. The 4k should be impressive based on the extendeds picture quality. (Fingers crossed-lol)
The theatrical cut has better picture quality than the extended:

And the 4K will include that only.

Back on the big screen for 3 nights.

Has anyone been to a Fathom event that looked good? The ones I've been to have been YouTube quality at best.

In fact, Superman Returns made money than Batman Begins worldwide. Yet, Batman got two more sequels and Superman got the shaft. YET AGAIN!!! There was no reason they could not have made a sequel to Superman Returns. It would've been better than Man of Steel. Especially, with Bryan Singer behind the camera. I like Zach Synder, but Bryan directs circles around Zach every day. Zach doesn't even have one great comic book movie under his belt like Bryan does. And Bryan's got four (with three of them being quite excellent).
?

Devil Wears Prada production budget was 35 million, Superman Returns was like 223 million.

I haven't seen a good fathom events screening. The moment I see that they're running it, my excitement deflates.

There seems to be a slight difference in geometry between those comparison shots. Not just that one but all the caps. Either one is stretched a bit or one is squished a bit.

Newer transfer is newer, it's not better just because it's the theatrical cut. One has nothing to do with the other. This will hopefully look as it should on UHD, and the complaints about it being too soft and grainy will quickly stack up like Supes rebuilding the Great Wall of China with his magical powers of telekinesis.

I didn’t know the extended cut was an older transfer. I thought the pq depended on the source material..

It does, but not all transfers are created equal. Different scanners have different properties, you'll have different project managers handling grain management, dirt clean-up etc. And that the two transfers took place several years apart (SE dates from at least 2006 while the theatrical followed in 2011) also factors into it.

Me too. You can write them and see if they are having a DCP for that showing or if it's one of their (sigh) streaming "presentations." I asked them why they don't show the format with each showing and they didn't answer my question but instead said that I could write them whenever I wanted to and ask. The rep was being helpful at the least which I appreciate, but any respecting company wouldn't show a heavily compressed SAT broadcast on a big screen and claim it's high quality. That shit looks like, well, shit on a 65" screen, let alone a big cinema screen.

Yeah, Fathom is such a mixed bag. Their TCM Big Screen Classics series is all DCPs because TCM insisted on it, and those look great. Everything else, however, is a luck of the draw. Their Studio Ghibli screenings are DCPs, but when I watched Little Shop of Horrors last year, it was a satellite feed and had all kinds of compression artifacts (though the sound was great). I love Superman too much to miss out on seeing it on the big screen, but I'm definitely keeping my expectations in check.

I wish WB would give this a Dolby Cinema release like they did for Blade Runner when that film hit 4K (Sony did the same for Close Encounters, as well). Imagine hearing that new Atmos track in that auditorium.

When the 2006 DVDs came out, the initial batch included a 2.0 fold-down of the remix on the theatrical cut. WB did issue replacements with a 2.0 rendering of the original audio, but even then I remember some talk online that it wasn't decoding the way a proper Dolby Surround track should.

I still think the 2.0 on the current theatrical BD is just a lossless version of that track. Most likely, it was taken from an early video master that was not matrixed, which may be why it sounds flatter and less directional than the early 90s laserdisc.

Also, I recently saw a 35mm screening of the theatrical cut, and there was very noticeable directionality and surround activity on the soundtrack. Not nearly as much as on the remix, of course, but it was there.

So even though I'm just speculating, I'm sticking with that hypothesis.
Nope. The '78 Stereo is simply just an unimpressive mix that sounds almost entirely like flat stereo with very little to absolutely no surround information. I got to see a beautifully preserved print without fading that was run through the correct Dolby A type surround setting and it is identical to the corrected DVD audio and lossless BD theatrical audio track. This is the same audio that so distressed Donner and why he wanted to remix the film for 5.1. Essentially the majority of the surround activity is matrix leakage that occurs naturally with that type of processing-which is much greater in the original A type system and was drastically improved when SR was made.

I'm wondering what era print you saw. I think I saw an LPP reprint from 1981 or so because it had absolutely no fading-but it was a collector's print because the studio apparently didn't have one. If it was correctly presented they should have used the A type surround setting and not SR-but I'm not sure if many modern cinema processors have an A mode.

as other's have pointed out, Sony's titles have all been DCP's and they've looked great. Not happy that at the moment, the Fathom screenings are only at Regal's in and around the Washington DC metro area. I'm curious to know if Warner's will be releasing the Atmos track on the DCP like they have done with 'Blade Runner'

Did they ever color correct the theaterical like they did the extended?
It's been so long since that debate that I don't remember.
I have the Anthology set but never watched the theatrical release.

I want to watch the Man of Steel, not Man of Teal.
